Will Teladoc Treat Ear Infection

Diagnosing & Treating Ear Pain Online

What is Teladoc

Ear pain is a common symptom for many illnesses, including:

  • Middle ear infections
  • Trauma and more.

Ear pain is different than an ear infection. Online, we can treat some causes of ear pain, but not all. Specifically, we cannot treat a middle ear infection online because as of now, we cannot look at the ear drum without an otoscope to confirm the diagnosis. Middle ear infections are the most common type of ear infection and typically are caused by bacteria and viruses. Bacteria ear infections require an antibioitic to clear them and viral ear infections should be treated with supportive care.

During a video consult on TelaCare, your doctor will ask you a series of targeted questions to determine if your symptoms are bacterial or viral. Then your physician will proceed to determine the best treatment plan for you. This is based on duration, severity of symptoms and your medical history. Questions about your work and home environment may be discussed as well.

Once a diagnosis has been made, your doctor will go over the risk and benefits of the various treatment plans. The biggest obstacle will most likely be managing the pain. In many cases, pain control is all that is needed while your body fights off the infection. Depending on the cause and severity of the infection, your treatment plan may include:

  • A warm compress
  • Ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin IB, etc.
  • Tylenol/Acetaminophen if fever is a symptom
  • A prescription for antibiotics
  • A referral to a specialist
  • How Does Teladoc Work

Simple service is one of the hallmarks Teladoc prides itself on, so first-time users should have no problem finding the help they need in just a few minutes. After youve registered an account, you can join a waiting room and set an appointment for a future time or wait for the next available doctor.

Pricing for services varies, although general medical consultations are always $75 and are covered by many major insurance plans. These general consultations are designed to treat common conditions such as sinus infections and the flu. For more specific concerns, you can try one of Teladocs specialty services. Either way, your doctor will provide quality treatment, including providing prescriptions you may need.

How did you find the parents responded to the app?

We approached parents just before their kids were about to have surgery to have ear tubes put in. We did a couple minutes of training, and found that the parents had close to identical accuracy to the physicians who had been testing them. We had 25 parents do the test, and 24 of the cases, the parents had the same result as the physicians who used the app.

How do you imagine this app will integrate with the current health care landscape?

One way our app could be used is with telemedicine. You could share the results with the doctor and book an appointment with the specialist if the doctor thinks you need to see one. It could reduce the amount of waiting time and even reduce costs. These features are not yet available, but were working towards them.

Is it already available in app stores? And what does the future look like?

Its not currently available in app stores, but were hoping to have it in there in a years time. Were also hoping to get FDA approval by the end of year. We created a company Edus Health and are partnering with physicians in developing countries. One need is for parents, but doctors in developing countries may not have access to specialist equipment.

Yes, however, any prescription of antibiotics must be accurate and professional. We understand the negative consequences that may result from over-prescribing, and thus our doctors will only write prescriptions in instances where such medication is absolutely necessary.

Antibiotics arenât always the right treatment. Antibiotics do not fight infections caused by viruses like colds, flu, most sore throats, bronchitis, and many sinus and ear infections. Before Trying Home Remedies Get A Diagnosis First

Before trying home remedies, its important to get the right diagnosis first. Its estimated that up to two-thirds of women who buy over-the-counter yeast infection treatment do not have a yeast infection. Other types of infections like bacterial vaginosis, sexually transmitted diseases, and urinary tract infections can be easily mistaken for yeast infections. If you are unsure of what you are experiencing, see your gynecologist before trying to treat it yourself.

Foods and herbs with natural antifungal properties may help treat or prevent yeast overgrowth in the body. Most home remedies have still not been proven by science, so its important to use caution when choosing one. If you have any questions, talk with your healthcare provider.

    Medication Myth: Antibiotics Cure All

It goes like thisIm feeling off. Could I be getting sick? No, no, I dont have time for it this week. Oh wait, oh no, Im sick, Im definitely sick. I need meds. NOOOOOOW!

Unfortunately, medication isnt always the easy solution to feeling better. Antibiotics, in particular, are not cure-alls for every sickness: They only work to treat bacterial infections. It can even be dangerous to take antibiotics when not indicated, like for a viral infection.

So before you chew out the doctor for not writing you a script, lets take a look at how antibiotics work, why they might not work, and how they may be used most effectively.

    Illnesses from infection

Antibiotics are some of the most frequently prescribed medications in medicine. They work quickly to destroy the spread of bacteria in the body when its been taken over by a nasty bug. Bacterial infections include strep throat whooping cough some pneumonias, ear infections, and sexually transmitted diseases and tuberculosis, to name a few. Antibiotics are often part of the treatment plan for these illnesses.

The most common conditions in the U.S. this time of yearlike colds and the fluare typically viral infections. Many sore throats, sinus and ear infections, and cases of bronchitis are also due to viruses that will not improve with an antibiotic medication.

St Smartphone App Can Detect Ear Infections In Children

With a phone and small paper funnel, software is highly effective in sensing fluid buildup behind eardrum.

    • School of Medicine: Brian Donohue – 206.543.7856,
    • School of Computer Science & Engineering: Sarah McQuate – 206.543.2580,

Ear infections are the most common reason that parents bring their children to a pediatrician, according to the National Institutes of Health.

This condition occurs when fluid builds up in the middle ear behind the eardrum and is infected. This buildup is also common in another condition called otitis media with effusion. Any fluid buildup can be painful and make it hard for children to hear, which can be especially detrimental when they are learning to talk.

Both conditions are hard to diagnose because symptoms are vague: Children might tug on their ears or have fevers, or be asymtomatic. Young children may be unable to describe where they hurt.

University of Washington researchers have created software that can detect fluid behind the eardrum by simply using a piece of paper and a smartphone’s microphone and speaker. The smartphone makes a series of soft audible chirps into the ear through a small paper funnel and, depending on how the chirps are reflected back to the phone, the app determines the presence of fluid with a detection probability of 85%. This is on par with the best current diagnostics, which involve instruments using acoustics or puffs of air.
