Oral Treatment For Dog Yeast Infections

I’m a Dirty, Filthy Girl | Baroness von Sketch Show | IFC

Kelso points out that sometimes topical medications just aren’t effective, especially for dogs that hate bath time or have long, dense coats that make it hard to get topical treatments on the skin. In these situations, oral treatment may be the only option.

Taking an antifungal pill can also be better for more advanced yeast infection cases because it kills yeast fast. But prescriptions like ketoconazole, fluconazole, itraconazole, and terbinafine aren’t without a downsidethey can also cause stomach upset and affect the liver. According to Kelso, monitoring your pet with regular blood work is necessary during oral treatment.

Save Your Money And Don’t Get Any Of Those Vaginal Ph Test Kits

When you’re trying to solve a problem in your pants FAST, it can be tempting to grab one of those expensive kits that promises to tell you whether you have a yeast infection or not, but if you have any doubts as to whether you have one, call a doc.

“The OTC test strips are only testing for the vaginal pH, which is not definitive for saying if it is a yeast infection or something else. It is only testing whether or not the pH is off,” explains Dr. Brandye. Your vaginal pH could be changed due to a variety of other factors such as your menstrual cycle , recent sexual intercourse, recently having taken antibiotics, or multiple infections .

How Your Dogs Yeast Infection Is Diagnosed

The only surefire way to tell if your dog has a yeast infection is to take him to the vet. Your vet will take a sample from your dog’s infected ear or skin by swab or scrape, with a piece of tape, or by simply pressing a microscope slide along the skin. Reviewing this sample under a microscope can reveal if your pup has yeast and how much of it there is.

In addition, your vet will analyze the sample for other issues. “Frequently, dogs with yeast also have bacterial infections or skin mites ,” Kelso says. “In these cases, treating only the yeast won’t solve the problem.”

Other Home Remedies For Yeast Infections

Much as you might like to cottagecore your way through a yeast infection, natural home remedies like yogurt, garlic, vinegar, and tea tree oil arent going to solve your problems.

In fact, using an unproven remedy instead of an OTC med might make the infection worse, since it gives the yeast more time to flourish and could potentially make your tissue more irritated.

Theres no place for commercial yogurt or garlic in treating yeast infections. Douching with vinegar can actually increase the risk for other infections like bacterial vaginosis, and tea tree oil can actually kill friendly microbes, explains Felice Gersh, MD, an OB/GYN and founder of the Integrative Medical Group of Irvine in Irvine, California.

One home option that might actually be helpful? Coconut oil. Test-tube studies, at least, suggest that it can help fight the bad bacteria that cause yeast infections about as well as conventional antifungals.

But its far from a proven treatment. So if you want to give it a try, definitely talk with your gyno first. They might recommend using the coco to complement a proven antifungal treatment.

Much like athlete’s foot, an infection caused by another type of fungus , Green says yeast can turn up on feet, too. Sweaty socks or shoes could be to blame, so keep your feet clean and free of extra moisture to prevent yeast from growing between your toes. These are best treated with an antifungal over-the-counter cream.

Watch a hot doctor explain whether you have to treat yeast infections or not:

This yeast infection is common, but it’s usually only found in babies who are breast- or bottle-feeding, Green says. If they haven’t mastered swallowing yet, the milk can sit on their tongues, causing an infection. Doctors will prescribe an oral antifungal treatment to clear up the infection and white patches on the tongue that may come with it.

Breastfeeding moms are more prone to get yeast infections on their breasts, Green says. A baby’s mouth can change the pH balance and add moisture that helps yeast grow. The infection can also occur under the breasts, caused by extra sweat. To keep the fungus from causing problems, keep the area clean and avoid staying in a sweaty sports bra too long after a workout. Like with other yeast infections on the skin, an antifungal cream will clear this up if it stays in a concentrated area. If the infection spreads, it’s time to see an M.D. to see if you need an oral prescription, Green says.

Things To Avoid When Fighting A Yeast Infection

  • Taking birth control pills – Birth control pills weaken the immune system, making you succeptable to yeast.
  • Taking antibiotics – Antibiotics also weaken the immune system.
  • Feminine deodorants – These can be very irritating to anyone, especially those with yeast infections.
  • Non-cotton underwear – Any underwear made of man-made fibers is not breathable, as cotton is. They trap moisture and heat, creating a perfect environment for yeast.
  • Clothing that is tight in the crotch – Tight clothing also creates a warm environment for yeast to grow.
  • Sitting in a wet bathing suit for a prolonged period – This creates not only a warm environment, but a moist one, as well. Perfect for yeast growth!
  • Pantyhose – Tight, man-made fiber that also allows yeast to flourish.
  • Foods that feed yeast – Avoid sugar, yeast, refined foods . See our list of food to eat and avoid when you have candida.

Yeast Infection Of The Mouth

A mouth yeast infection can be a scary thing. Technically, the term is thrush and happens mostly in infants and babies. Adults can get a mouth yeast infection though, so it’s important to know how to cure it as fast as possible.

There are many triggers that can cause a mouth yeast infection.

Often people who suffer from asthma and use inhalers will get a mouth yeast infection. The steroids in the inhaler medication can bring about a mouth yeast infection very easily. That’s why it’s so important to rinse after using an inhaler. Symptoms of a mouth yeast infection include white patchy sores on the mouth that may bleed if they are scraped or tongued. They are usually very uncomfortable and can look pretty gross.

A mouth yeast infection in adults can also be a symptom of a weak immune system so watch out for that. For example, people who have HIV have a much higher probability of developing a mouth yeast infection or thrush. Having a dry mouth can lead to thrush as well. The condition opens your mouth tissue up to bacteria and makes it more vulnerable.

Diabetes causes a mouth yeast infection as well. Candida or Yeast thrives off of sugars and a diabetic will have higher sugar levels in their blood so it only follows that they are more vulnerable to the condition.

Pregnancy can also bring on a mouth yeast infection because of changes in hormonal levels.

You May Want To Wait To Have Sex Until Your Symptoms Clear

You’re probably wondering how long to wait for sex after a yeast infection treatment. But honestly, if you actually have one, you may not want to do anything because of the dry, irritating feeling. “You can also spread yeast between partners, as it typically grows on moist surfaces,” says Dr. Shirazian. Once you feel the treatment start to kick in, that should be your green light for any kind of sexual activity. “You can be active when you no longer feel irritated and youre not noticing the thick signature discharge,” Dr. Shirazian adds.

Is It A Yeast Infection Or Something Else Four Conditions To Consider

Disinfectant Wipes Opening Up with Doug Smith

Vaginal concerns can be a common occurrence. Sometimes the cause is obvious such as changes in menstrual cycle, sexual activity or a new product you may be using. Other times, the cause is not as clear.

Since many have had a yeast infection before it may be easy to assume your recurrent symptoms have the same cause, however that is not always the case.

A vaginal yeast infection is a common fungal infection that causes burning, itching, discharge and discomfort in the vulvar and vaginal areas, said Jennifer Nelson, DO, an internal medicine-pediatric specialist at Banner University Medicine Internal Medicine Clinic in Phoenix, AZ. Although its common, many other vaginal conditions can mimic a yeast infection but require different treatment. This is why its always important to discuss symptoms with your doctor to ensure that you are receiving the correct treatment.

As Dr. Nelson mentioned, there are a few common conditions that can be mistaken for yeast infections. She walked us through four other important vaginal health issues to consider when these symptoms arise.

How To Treat Your Dogs Yeast Infection

There are two kinds of treatments for a dog yeast infection: antifungal pills and topical products like shampoos and ointments.

If the yeast infection is mild or limited to one or two small areas, topical treatment may be enough. But if the infection is severe or widespread, your dog may need oral medication. Your vet may also recommend a combination of treatments. Many dogs will benefit from medications to relieve itching and discomfort while the infection is clearing up.

Topical Treatment For Skin Yeast Infections

Topical treatments for canine yeast infection on the skin include shampoos, ointments, and wipes. Kelso says that using them will typically involve a few steps:

  • If their skin or fur is oily, waxy, or scaly, wash your dog with a degreasing shampoo. This removes the filmy buildup that blocks topical medications from working.
  • Massage an antifungal dog shampoo into the skin for 10 minutes before rinsing well. Vets usually recommend using a product that contains miconazole, clotrimazole, ketoconazole, climbazole, and terbinafine.

Applying Oils Down There Might Not Be The Best Remedy Either

Other natural remedies for yeast infections you may hear about are coconut oil and tea tree oil. But take caution, the docs say. “I would suggest you avoid the tea tree oil or coconut oil in the vaginal area because research doesnt suggest they work, and they may cause more harm than good,” says Dr. Rainford. Tea tree oil can actually be irritating if you put it near your vulva. And coconut oil, while generally safe for your skin, “is not consistently effective at curing yeast,” Dr. Sophocles points out.

When To See A Doctor For A Yeast Infection

As with any womens health concern, you should always consult a doctor to prescribe appropriate treatment. Insufficient treatment can cause recurring symptoms or chronic infections.

People of menstrual age are more likely to experience yeast infections than younger people with vaginas who have not yet started menstruating. This is likely due to many different factors, but the hormonal changes that bring about menstruation can play a role in increasing yeast infection risk for some people.

Among people who get recurring yeast infections, many report experiencing symptoms at the same time every month, in sync with their menstrual cycle. High levels of estrogen can lead to candida overgrowth, and estrogen increases after your period. Yeast infections that occur before your period may be due to changes in vaginal pH that happen during that time as part of your cycle.

How to insert the cream: Open the tube by unscrewing the cap. Press the sharp point of the cap into the sealed end of the tube to break open the seal. Attach the applicator to the tube of cream by placing A end of the applicator firmly onto tube of cream . Do not pull out the applicator plunger. Gently squeeze the cream into the applicator until the applicator is full, which youll see when the plunger has been fully pushed out. Separate the applicator from the tube. Do not release pressure on the tube until you have separated it from the filled applicator. After each use, replace the cap and roll up the tube over the empty part from the bottom.

Lie down as soon as possible after inserting the cream to help minimize leakage. Repeat these steps each night before bedtime for the next 6 days.

    Cranberry Juice Or Pills

Who hasn’t tried chugging cranberry juice at the first sign of vaginal discomfort? Unfortunately, doing so is not a natural cure for yeast infections, says Dr. Richardson. In fact, you’re actually treating an entirely separate part of the body. “They’re better used for the urinary tract system,” she explains.
