The 7 Biggest Yeast Infection Myths | Ask Cleveland Clinic’s Expert

You can find many over-the-counter antifungal products in the health and beauty section of a grocery store. Look for ointments or suppositories with miconazole or clotrimazole. Simple yeast infections can often be treated at home, but if your symptoms return in less than two months, you should make an appointment with your doctor.

Many women use natural remediessuch as tea tree oil cream or coconut oilto treat yeast infections at home, but these treatment methods are not as effective prescription or over-the-counter medication. You should always consult your doctor before trying any alternative treatment methods.

When To Get Expert Advice

Urgent care should not replace an annual gynecological check-up. If you have a chronic problem such as premenstrual migraines or suspect the urgent care made a misdiagnosis, Butler says youll also want to see an ob-gyn.

For example, Lee says that recurrent vaginitis looks like three or more infections per year. More than three UTIs per year could be troubling . Your primary care doctor or ob-gyn wont necessarily get records or reports from your urgent care visit, so youll be responsible for your follow-up.

Its important to remember that urgent care professionals arent gynecologists who specialize in womens healthcare. Urgent care facilities may not be as careful or curious as to your ob-gyn in diagnosing the specific bacteria causing reinfection, which would require a different antibiotic.

In some cases, as with UTIs, your primary care doctor or ob-gyn could order additional tests to determine potential causes. Grey areas exist, too, Lee says. For example, a lump or bump on your vulva can generally wait. But if the spot becomes increasingly red or you spike a fever, it may be harboring a nasty infection.

In this case, an urgent care clinic can likely drain the area and start you on a round of antibiotics.

When To Go To Urgent Care For A Yeast Infection

You may want to seek medical attention for your yeast infection if:

  • This is the first time youâve had yeast infection symptoms
  • Youâre not sure whether you have a yeast infection
  • Your symptoms arenât relieved after treating with over-the-counter antifungal vaginal creams or suppositories
  • You develop other symptoms
  • Your primary care doctor is unavailable

Best answer:

Answer by ShadowI work at a walk in clinic where we do pelvic exams. They can diagnose yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, and trichomonas . We can also take a sample of cervical mucus and send that to the lab to test for gonorrhea or chlamydia. And if you have any obvious lesions, can test for herpes. We do not do pap smears, prescribe birth control, or do any blood work for stds .

How to Treat a Yeast Infection

Vaginal concerns can be a common occurrence. Sometimes the cause is obvious such as changes in menstrual cycle, sexual activity or a new product you may be using. Other times, the cause is not as clear.

Since many have had a yeast infection before it may be easy to assume your recurrent symptoms have the same cause, however that is not always the case.

A vaginal yeast infection is a common fungal infection that causes burning, itching, discharge and discomfort in the vulvar and vaginal areas, said Jennifer Nelson, DO, an internal medicine-pediatric specialist at Banner University Medicine Internal Medicine Clinic in Phoenix, AZ. Although its common, many other vaginal conditions can mimic a yeast infection but require different treatment. Should You Go to an Urgent Care for Vaginitis

There are two basic types of vaginitis. The first is superficial and usually caused by Candida Albicans . This type of infection should be treated with an antifungal cream or suppository. The second, more severe form requires a prescription pill called metronidazole to help clear it up. Metronidazole is typically administered orally and takes anywhere from one to four days to start taking effect. Many women find that theyre still in pain during those few days, which leaves them wondering whether they should go to an urgent care center for treatment instead. Though most symptoms of vaginitis will subside within a few days with home treatments, its good to keep your options open.

How Is An Armpit Yeast Infection Treated

Treatment for your armpit yeast infection may include an antifungal medication. Your healthcare provider may recommend an antifungal cream, ointment, powder or other solution. You can apply the antifungal directly onto the infected area of your skin. You can buy many antifungal creams and other medications over the counter. Your healthcare provider may prescribe a stronger antifungal option if necessary.

Its important to keep your underarm area clean and dry as part of your yeast infection treatment. This can also help prevent a yeast infection from returning. Exposing your armpits to air may help. Drying powders and topical antiperspirants may help dry out your skin and prevent future infections.

    What Is A Yeast Infection

Yeast is something youve probably heard of before, and that you consume fairly often. If youve ever done any baking then you know that yeast is what makes bread rise. If youve done any brewing or drinking, you know that yeast is what makes beer. This kind of yeast is not a problem. There is a different kind of yeast though, Candida albicans, which can be very problematic. This bacteria grows in the human body and causes oral and genital infection.

How Do Doctors Treat Yeast Infections

Your doctor may prescribe medication to treat a vaginal yeast infection. For severe yeast infections or complicated cases, you may be prescribed a 14-day cream or suppository vaginal treatment. Fluconazole is a prescription tablet that often clears up a yeast infection in two or three doses. Prescription medicines often work much more effectively and quicker than over-the-counter medications. If youre especially uncomfortable, you may want to see your doctor to get back to your normal routine quicker.

You can prevent yeast infections by:

    • Washing your underwear in hot water
    • Avoid wearing tight pants, pantyhose or tights and leggings
    • Replace your feminine products regularly
    • Wear natural fibers, cotton or silk
    • Dont use scented tampons or pads
    • Avoid sitting in hot tubs or taking frequent hot baths
    • Dont sit around in your wet bathing suit

Do You Have A Vaginal Yeast Infection

Some signs of a vaginal yeast infection include:

    • Pain and swelling in the vulva
    • Pain or burning sensations during urination or sexual intercourse
    • A thick, clumpy, white vaginal discharge that has no odor

Because these symptoms can also be caused by more serious conditions, including bacterial vaginosis and many sexually transmitted diseases , its easy to guess wrong about a vaginal yeast infection. When left untreated, many STDs and BV can cause serious health issues. Therefore, its important to see a physician for a proper diagnosis and treatment, even if the symptoms are mild.

Antifungal medications are often recommended for treating yeast infections. While some yeast infection treatments are available over the counter, its always best to consult with a physician first. Using this type of treatment when you do not actually have a yeast infection can cause your body to become resistant to the yeast infection medicine, making actual yeast infections more difficult to treat in the future.
