- By Monique Tello, MD, MPH, Contributor
It was February, and clinic was teeming with respiratory infections of all kinds: mostly the common cold, but also bronchitis, pneumonia, and sinus infections. The patients were coming in usually thinking that they needed antibiotics for their sinus infection, or another respiratory infection. The first patient on my schedule was a healthcare provider with sinus infection written down as her main issue.* Shed had about two weeks of nasal and sinus congestion which she blamed on a viral upper respiratory infection . Her two young kids had been sick with colds all winter, so she wasnt surprised to have these symptoms, along with endless postnasal drip and a cough.
Her congestion had improved a bit at one point, and she thought that she was finally getting better. But then, the day before her appointment, she awoke with throbbing pain between her eyes, completely blocked nasal passages, and, more concerning to her, green pus oozing from her left tear duct. She had body aches, chills, and extreme fatigue.
How Yeast Infections Develop
Your body is normally very good at regulating itself, maintaining all the right chemical levels for good functioning.
Additionally, the population of C. albicans is naturally kept in check by the bacteria and other microorganisms that make up your microbiome, the community of microorganisms that inhabit your body.
Sometimes, though, problems will occur that alter that chemistry, throwing certain bodily functions off-balance, as well as disturbing the microbial balance.
When this happens, the scales may tip in favor of C. albicans, allowing the fungus to grow out of control and cause a yeast infection.
Common symptoms of vaginal yeast infections include:
- Vaginal itching and a burning sensation in the vaginal region, including the labia and vulva
- White vaginal discharge that’s sometimes described as being similar in consistency to cottage cheese
- Pain during urination or sex
- Redness and swelling of the vulva

Antibiotic overuse may eventually lead to antibiotic resistance. This essentially means that the bacteria have become immune to the antibiotics. The estimate that each year in the U.S., antibiotic-resistant bacteria cause more than 23,000 deaths.

Symptoms Of An Ear Infection
When your child has an ear infection, it will typically start with a cold. They will most likely have a cough, congestion and a runny nose. A common indication of an ear infection is when your child gets a fever after the cold symptoms appear. If the fever lasts for more than 48 hours, then its time to get your childs ears looked at, said Shannon Carruthers, M.D., a pediatrician at Sanford Childrens in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
With an ear infection, pain in the ear can be intense. Older children will be able to verbalize this, but obviously babies cannot. Excessive crying might mean that your baby is experiencing pain and it is time to bring them in.
Some other common symptoms your child may display are fussiness and crying, poor feeding and trouble sleeping. The pain is usually worse at night, and lying down can make it worse.
In the meantime, before your doctor visit, you can administer Motrin/Tylenol to relieve the pain, Dr. Carruthers said.

Overall, most serious fungal infections are rare, but they do happen. They are most common among people with weak immune systems. People with certain health conditions may need to take medications with side effects that can weaken your immune system and put you at risk for fungal infections.
Specifically, corticosteroids and TNF inhibitors are two types of medications that can increase your chances of getting a fungal infection.1
- Corticosteroids are medications that treat conditions including arthritis, asthma, allergic reactions, and autoimmune diseases such as lupus, sarcoidosis, or inflammatory bowel disease.
- TNF inhibitors are medications that treat autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel disease.

STIs and BV require different treatments than yeast infections and, if left untreated, can cause serious health problems.
- Using treatment when you do not actually have a yeast infection can cause your body to become resistant to the yeast infection medicine. This can make actual yeast infections harder to treat in the future.
- Some yeast infection medicine may weaken condoms and diaphragms, increasing your chance of getting pregnant or an STI when you have sex. Talk to your doctor or nurse about what is best for you, and always read and follow the directions on the medicine carefully.

There are many different types of antibiotics. Some require only one pill while others will be taken for up to 2 weeks. Your doctor will figure out which one is best for you based on:
- How severe your UTI is.
- Whether your UTI is complicated or uncomplicated.
- Whether youve previously had antibiotic-resistant UTIsa UTI that did not get better after taking medication.
Always take all the antibiotics as directed. Never skip a dose, even if you are feeling better. If you stop taking the antibiotics, the infection can come back even worse, as a result of a phenomenon called bacterial resistance.
In addition to antibiotics, there are some other ways you can manage your symptoms.

How Steroids And Yeast Infections Are Connected
Steroids are another type of medication that can cause people to develop an infection from yeast.
The higher the dose and the longer you use them, the greater the risk, but even low-strength topical steroid creams may make yeast infections more likely by damping the body’s natural immune defenses.
The good news is that most yeast infections are easily treated with antifungal creams or suppositories purchased over the counter or through prescription.
If you think you have a vaginal yeast infection, speak with your doctor to discuss your treatment options.
It’s not recommended for women to use OTC creams before getting diagnosed by their doctors, because the symptoms of yeast infections are similar to those of other vaginal infections, such as bacterial vaginosis.
Most yeast infections subside within a few days after treatment starts.
