You’re probably wondering how long to wait for sex after a yeast infection treatment. But honestly, if you actually have one, you may not want to do anything because of the dry, irritating feeling. “You can also spread yeast between partners, as it typically grows on moist surfaces,” says Dr. Shirazian. Once you feel the treatment start to kick in, that should be your green light for any kind of sexual activity. “You can be active when you no longer feel irritated and youre not noticing the thick signature discharge,” Dr. Shirazian adds.

Can I Use Vagisil With Monistat

multivisualdesign: Will Anti Itch Cream Cure A Yeast Infection

While Vagisil and Monistat do not interact, it may be best to not use them together. Monistats product insert says that it should not be used with any other vaginal products because they may interfere with its effectiveness. Another thing to note is that using Vagisil with Monistat may make it difficult to see if Monistat is working to treat a yeast infection. Vagisil could cover up yeast infection side effects. If Monistat is ineffective and it is hard to tell, it could delay seeking medical care. However, it is best to consult a healthcare provider to see if it is okay to use these two products together based on individual circumstances.

Although you can keep using the creams along with the diet change to speed up the recovery, I would recommend that you go for a more permanent, natural solution instead of the creams.

I tend to prefer more “natural” methods where I can use them. That said, Monistat works for many womenâremember to check with your doctor if it’s your first time experiencing what you think is a vaginal yeast infection to make sure you get the appropriate treatment.

In the long run, it’s always best to find a solution that will correct the problem instead of just temporarily treating it. Changing your diet is a great way to start, and hopefully, it will help restore balance in your body.

What Are The Main Differences Between Vagisil And Monistat

Vagisil is an OTC local anesthetic cream containing benzocaine 5% and resorcinol 2%. There is also a Vagisil maximum strength formulation which contains benzocaine 20% and resorcinol 3%, as well as a Vagisil sensitive anti-itch cream which contains hydrocortisone 1%, a steroid that helps with external itching. Although Vagisil is often thought of as a yeast infection treatment, it does not actually cure yeast infections.

Monistat is an OTC antifungal cream that contains the active ingredient miconazole nitrate. Monistat is available in a variety of formulations: a one-day , three-day , or seven-day treatment. You can buy Monistat as an internal vaginal cream or suppository. Some types of Monistat are available as a combination pack, with a tube of miconazole 2% cream that you can use externally to relieve symptoms.

Stopping The Cycle Of Genital Yeast Infections

The genital area naturally contains Candida. Once this balance is disrupted, though, Candida overgrowth can happen.

For some people, being prone to yeast infections is simply hereditary. Overgrowth of yeast can also happen as a result of:

Genital yeast infections are also more common in people with compromised immune systems and who have diabetes. Sexual activity and high estrogen levels are other risk factors.

There are also studies suggesting chronic yeast infections may be due to hypersensitivity to Candida.

A genital yeast infection can cause burning and itching sensations. You may also notice a red rash, especially around the vulva or anywhere . When you urinate, you may see a cottage cheese-like discharge and feel burning on the surrounding skin.

Over-the-counter suppository medications can usually treat vaginal yeast infections. However, if this is your first yeast infection or first recurring yeast infection, you may want to see your doctor. They can rule out the possibility of other infections.

Once treated, you can help keep genital yeast infections from returning by keeping good hygiene habits and promoting normal vaginal bacterial balance. Here are some tips:

    • Wear cotton underwear and loose clothing.
    • Take daily showers.

Is It Normal For Monistat To Itch Or Burn

Monistat is a topical cream that can be used to treat yeast infections. It is applied to the skin externally, and the medication will typically work within three days.

It is not normal to itch or burn after applying Monistat. If you are experiencing itching or burning after applying Monistat, it could be an indication of another type of infection or irritation. It is important to seek medical advice if you experience these symptoms after applying Monistat.

Drug Interactions Of Vagisil Vs Monistat

Various Types of Yeast Infection Cream

Both drugs have very few drug interactions since they are used topically. Vagisil should not be used with retinoids, such as adapalene or tretinoin, because the combination could be too irritating to the skin.

Monistat should not be used in combination with Coumadin , an anticoagulant that is also known as a blood thinner. The combination could lead to increased levels of warfarin in the body, which could lead to bleeding.

Consult your healthcare provider for more information on drug interactions of Vagisil or Monistat.

    Causes And Risk Factors

Vaginal yeast infections are usually caused by a type of yeast called Candida albicans. Its normal for this yeast to live in the mucous membranes lining the genitals. There are usually only small amounts of it, though, so it doesn’t cause any problems.

But the healthy balance of microorganisms living in the membranes is sometimes disrupted for instance, through pregnancy or medication.

The level of estrogen in the body is particularly high during pregnancy. That can upset the healthy balance and increase the likelihood of developing a vaginal yeast infection. Taking the contraceptive pill affects a woman’s hormone levels in a similar way to pregnancy. So women who take the pill are also more likely to have yeast infections.

Some illnesses increase the risk of vaginal yeast infections. These include diabetes and other diseases that weaken the immune system. Various medications can increase the risk too, such as , steroids, hormone therapy, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Other factors that increase the risk of vaginal yeast infections include stress, washing your genitals with soap, wearing synthetic and tight clothes, sweating and using non-breathable panty liners or sanitary pads. These things allow the yeast to thrive, leading to an inflammation.

What Are The Different Monistat Preparations Available

Monistat is an antifungal medication that can be used to treat vaginal infections. There are three different preparations of Monistat: Monistat-1, Monistat-3, and Monistat-7.

The three medicines are designed for different treatment lengths depending on the severity of the infection. For example, Monistat-7 is for more serious infections and it takes seven days to cure while Monistat-1 is for milder infections and only takes one day to cure.

The 1-day treatment of Monistat has been shown to be effective for treating fungal vaginitis . However, the effectiveness of this medicine for other types of vaginal infections has not been tested and there are no studies that support its use for other purposes.

If you have any concerns about using Monistat, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

How Long Does It Take For Monistat 7 To Work

Monistat 7 is designed to work for seven days, using 100 mg of miconazole nitrate per dose. Monistat 7 does not however, cure the root cause of the vaginal infections in cases where they are caused by a candida yeast overgrowth problem in your body.

This is very common, and the main cause of recurrent vaginal infections. Very often the vaginal yeast infection is caused by a systemic yeast imbalance in the body, as a result of the overgrowth of a yeast-like fungi called candida. In this case, there are usually additional symptoms in different areas in the body. Skin infections, feet, digestive issues, gas, bloating, mood swings are common symptoms. This can change the treatment options you may need.

Treating a yeast infection on your skin is simple, and most infections clear up after a few weeks. Yeast grows naturally in and on your body, but sometimes your system has an imbalance that leads to a yeast infection. If you get one, you’ll want immediate relief. While the infection is bothersome, it’s also highly treatable if you identify a yeast infection, address the causes, and apply topical treatments.

    Yeast Infection Getting Worse

On occasions though, the yeast causing your infection can be a strong strain of fungus depending on the cause of your infection. If it’s due to antibiotics use then the yeast could have already mutated into a strain that an OTC yeast cream has no effect on apart from making it stronger which can make it feel like the cream is making you feel worse. This can lead you down the road of continually trying more powerful prescription yeast infection treatments until you discover the real cause of your infection, and then start addressing the cause first

    Dr. Rx

When I see a patient in my office for vaginal itching/burning, the first thing I do is look at their age. Are they an adolescent and not yet sexually active or are they in menopause? Other important details for me to understand is if they are sexually active, if this is a new problem or if it keeps occurring, if this recently started or they have been dealing with it for a while, and have they tried any treatments. I then want them to get as specific about their problem as possible. Dr. Jessica Katz
