Sea Snails Boiled In Oil
Paulus Aegineta , Byzantine physician and author of the encyclopedia Medical Compendium in Seven Books, listed several uses for buccinae, or large sea snails from the Buccinidae family. The burned shells acted as desiccants for chronic open wounds. The insides were good for earaches. That part of them which is as it were their flesh when alive, if boiled in oil, renders the oil a useful injection for relieving earache.

When Medical Care Is Needed
New guidelines from the AAP recommend a more conservative approach to ear infection treatment for doctors and provide warning signs for parents. They recommend taking a child in if:
- The child has dizziness, hearing loss or increasing pain
- The child has a fever of over 102
- Child experiences any redness, swelling or loss of movement around the sore ear
- An object is lodged in the ear
- You suspect that the eardrum has burst
- Symptoms do not lessen within 48 hours
A wait and see approach is often recommended if:
- A child over 6 months has pain in one ear and a fever of less than 102
- A child over two years has pain in both ears and a fever of less than 102
- The pain seems to be lessening and none of the other warning factors are present
Garlic Poultices Or Oil
This seemed to be the most effective remedy, as our son fell asleep really quickly after we started this and slept through the night. He woke up feeling much better.
Garlic is a potent natural antibiotic and antiviral but it can be too harsh for a childs skin when used alone. To remedy this, I sliced some garlic and placed the slices between four sheets of gauze . I sewed the edges shut and used a bandana tied around his head to secure it.
The gauze kept the garlic from touching his skin directly but was porous enough to let the beneficial properties of the garlic get into the ear.
We repeated this treatment the next night to be safe but he was symptom free after the first night. Ive also heard of using onions in the same way, but I had garlic on hand so I used it.
An Amish friend swears by this remedy for more than just ear aches. If any of her children get sick, she makes similar poultices of garlic and onion and places on the feet, inside socks, during sleep. She said it hasnt failed her yet. Ive only tried once and it was really effective for my cold.
I also now keep garlic oil on hand for use if any of the kids start to complain of itching or pain in the ear and weve avoided ear infections since starting this.

Natural Earache Relief Methods That Really Work
1. Vitamin C but camu camu is a new one that we love–its natural vitamin C power in a whole food form.
2. Chinese herbal preparations recommended by our past practitioner
4. Essential Oil Antibacterial oil blend around the ear
5. Ear Pulling
Some practitioners recommend pulling on the earlobe gently in a number of different directions, and then following up by pulling firmly downward. This hasn’t worked for me, but some say it does for them.
A little bit diluted well on a cotton ball. placed gently in the ear. And some medical tape or sports tape to keep it from falling out. Bandaids just never worked well for us for this application.)
Side Note About Where to Buy Essential Oils
Read my Best Essential Oils Series to find out which company I buy from and why. It got VERY interesting along the way, so I recommend reading the whole thing, but of course you can skip to the end here.
7. Onion Juice
Another “interesting” remedy.
From the instructions on the internet, you are supposed to either press an onion or scrape at it to remove some of the “juice” from it. Then you either drop a bit of it into the ear or mix it with oil and do the same.
Well, let me tell you–getting juice out of onion isn’t easy. I tried several times. I would be interested in hearing if anyone out there has a better method for making this.

Respiratory Trouble Might Be An Infection
Legionnaires disease is a type of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, which can be inhaled in the mist from pools or steam from hot tubs. It can develop two days to two weeks after exposure to the bacteria, which thrives in warm water.
You can be unaware that youre breathing in the droplets from the air around a contaminated swimming pool or hot tub.
Typically, contamination is more common at indoor pools, but the bacteria can live outside in a warm, humid environment. Its more common in people over the age of 50, smokers, and those with weaker immune systems.
Prevention: Use portable test strips to test pools before going in. Smokers have an increased risk of developing it.
Symptoms: chest pain, shortness of breath, fever, chills, coughing up blood
What to do:If you or your child develop respiratory issues after being in a pool, see your doctor right away.
Respiratory problems after swimming may also be a sign of asthma or dry drowning, which is more common in children. If you or someone else is having trouble breathing, call 911.

Lots Of Fluids And Broth
Just as with an illness or infection, it is important to keep the body hydrated and supported nutritionally. Homemade bone broth is an easy way to accomplish this.
We almost always have some broth in the fridge or on the stove, but I keep some in the freezer as well for use during illness.

Important Cautions About Ear Infections
Before we get to the natural earache remedies, here are some important notes. Of course, take caution before putting anything into your or your child’s ear. If there is pus coming out or you otherwise suspect a burst eardrum, nothing should be put in the ear.
And of course, please seek medical advice before putting anything into your child’s ear .)
Why Is My Ear In Pain
Ear pain is most commonly associated with fluid buildup behind the ear drum linked to a middle ear infection. This is also known as acute otitis media .
Thankfully, you dont need antibiotics to treat most ear infections. They are viral infections, not bacterial infections. In fact, using antibiotics may cause adverse reactions.
In Antibiotics for acute otitis media in children, which reviewed earache treatments for several thousand children, they noted that, Adverse events occurred more often in children taking antibiotics. Those children treated with antibiotics did not get better faster than those who simply waited for the infection to pass.
Sometimes ear pain is caused by injury, or water or other fluid trapped in the ear.

Ear Infection Symptoms: Babies
These infections can be sneaky with babies or children who are too young to tell you what hurts. A lot of times theyâll start tugging or pulling on an ear. Little kids can also just get cranky, have trouble sleeping, or not eat well. Babies may push their bottles away because pressure in their ears makes it hurt to swallow.

For its advocates, it is a miraculous elixir that has replaced the morning coffee as their first drink of the day for most other people, it is bodily waste that should strictly confined to the toilet bowl. But is drinking one’s own urine really as good for you as its fans believe?
Last week, British hiker Paul Beck was stranded in the Spanish mountains for six days – and survived by drinking his own urine. The 33-year-old slipped and dislocated his hip while walking. As he waited for rescuers to find him, he tried to exist on powdered chocolate and raw oats, but eventually resorted to urinating into a cup and drinking a few drops a day. He said: “It was pretty awful but in all I did it around five times to keep myself hydrated.”
And last year, yachtsmen Mark Smith and Steven Freeman spent 11 days stranded in the South China Sea after their boat capsized and put their survival down to urine.
But apart from possibly helping to keep one alive in extreme circumstances, is drinking urine really good for your health?
Auto-urine therapy, or urotherapy as it is sometimes known, dates back to several ancient cultures and even, arguably, the Bible. Egyptian medical texts and Chinese and Indian documents mention the benefits of drinking one’s urine, while the Aztecs used it to disinfect wounds.
Bring your own – the guide to urotherapy
* Urine is 95 per cent water, but it also contains small quantities of nutrients including calcium, folic acid, iron, magnesium and zinc.

Food Allergies May Be Linked To Ear Pain
Food allergies can contribute to chronic ear infections. If you deal with chronic ear infections or other chronic health problems, try adjusting your diet.
Common allergens include dairy, gluten, eggs, soy, peanuts, and tree nuts. Work with your health care provider to see if you can identify any problem foods. Keeping ears clean and dry can also help prevent ear issues.
How To Know An Ear Infection Is Severe
Using one of the natural remedies to treat ear infections listed above can provide pain relief and natural healing, but there are still times where consulting a doctor is necessary.
I personally believe that having a good relationship with your doctor is important, and having a doctor diagnose issues is often the best first step even if you will choose holistic treatment methods.
Ear infections can be severe, and at times they may require modern intervention.
Ear infections, especially when they occur over and over again, can lead to scarring, ruptured ear drums, hearing loss, facial paralysis and more. These are scary symptoms, so it is important to be prudent.
Most doctors recommend coming in if an ear infection does not clear up on its own or with the help of natural remedies within 2-3 days.
You should also consider being seen if any of the following occurs:
- blood or pus is draining from the ear
- high fever persists
- pain does not decrease / inconsolable crying
- symptoms worsen
- difficulty hearing
I hope this information has helped you understand how to treat ear infections naturally at home. In addition to the remedies covered above, some moms swore by homeopathy, chiropractic treatment, acupuncture and craniosacral therapy for treating acute ear infections naturally and for putting an end to recurring ear infections in toddlers and babies.

When Is Irrigation Not Suitable
Ear irrigation is not suitable for everyone in all circumstances. The procedure may be unsuitable if any of the following factors apply:
- The person has had ear surgery in the last 12 months.
- A child has a tympanostomy tube, also called a grommet, which is a small tube that doctors insert to allow ventilation of the middle ear.
- Another foreign body is blocking the ear canal.
- The person was born with a cleft palate.
- The individual has a perforated eardrum or has had one in the last 12 months.
- The person has or has recently had otitis media, which is an infection of the middle ear.
- There is a mucous discharge from the ear, which could indicate an undiagnosed perforation.
Anyone who has had any problems, such as severe vertigo or pain, following previous irrigation should not undergo this procedure again.
Home Remedies For Ear Infections
For our child, we fell in the wait and see category, so I didnt take him in immediately but wanted to find ways to comfort him and help his body recover quickly.
After researching many remedies we settled on these natural remedies and he was pain free within 24 hours:
Important: I only felt comfortable putting these remedies on/around his ear because we were able to verify with an otoscope that his eardrum had not ruptured. I would never put anything in or around the ear if I suspected the ear drum had ruptured

Fall Fouls 2 Common Medical Issues We Deal With
Certain ailments seem to ebb and flow in a veterinary hospital. Right now we are seeing an increase in skin/ear issues as well as urinary issues in both dogs & cats. Skin & ear issues Classic & common signs that your pet may be suffering from an ear or skin infection are as follows:
- Intense itching
- Head shaking or rubbing against objects
- Unfamiliar and/or bad smell emanating from the ears or skin
- Open sores or scabs on the skin.
A common risk we often see of leaving an ear infection untreated is an Aural Hematoma. This is a broken blood vessel that develops within the ear flap and is caused by aggressive scratching or head shaking. Medical attention is necessary to drain the hematoma and administer medication. A cheap and simple ear infection treatment has now become a more costly outpatient surgical procedure Skin infections go from bad to worse very quickly. A simple, short course of Antibiotics can easily turn into WEEKS of treatment, many hospital follow-ups and unnecessary discomfort for your pet.
Its super important to have skin and ears checked immediately if you suspect an infection may be brewing. Ear and skin infections do NOT clear up on their own.
Urinary Issues Classic signs that your pet may be suffering from a Urinary infection are as follows:
- Frequent urination
- Inappropriate urination

Schedule A Recheck Exam
Recheck examinations are one of the most vital steps in successful cat ear infection treatment. Most ear infections are treated for a minimum of two to three weeks, but this can be extended, especially if there are any underlying or predisposing factors such as allergies.
During this visit, another sample will likely be taken from the ear canal and examined under a microscope. For this diagnostic to be successful, do NOT clean or medicate your cats ears at least 24 hours prior to the exam.
Your veterinarian can check to see whether the infection has resolved, particularly if your cat has had ear infections in the past. If its not, additional testing and treatment may be required.
Remember, even if your cat stops scratching or their ears look better, the infection may not have fully resolved. Since a cats ear canal is shaped like the letter L, debris such as hair, impacted wax, or residual infection can be hidden despite a normal, healthy-appearing ear.
Once the issue is resolved, speak to your veterinarian about ways to prevent reoccurring cat ear infections and other ear issues, and how often to clean your cats ears going forward.
