What To Look For
Supplements aren’t tested and regulated like drugs. Sometimes, the dosages and ingredients on the label don’t match what’s in the bottle.
When buying supplements, look for products that have been certified by one of the following:
- NSF International
- U.S. Pharmacopeia
These are independent labs that evaluate supplements for purity. They help ensure you’re getting what the label says. They don’t guarantee safety and effectiveness, however.
What Is An Extract
According to Oxford Dictionaries, an extract is a preparation containing the active ingredient of a substance in concentrated form. Naturally, we think vanilla extract, from which comes that luscious aroma we savor when chocolate chip cookies are pulled hot out of the oven, or drink a vanilla shake. But if you have ever tasted vanilla in its extract form, the flavor is not at all what you would think, likely because you are tasting the concentrated form. Its flavor is much more powerful.
The leaves of the olive tree produce an extract as well. The root word, extract, as a verb, means to withdraw by physical or chemical process, says Merriam-Webster. Extracts synonyms give the word even more flavor. Educe, evoke, elicit, extort, all mean to draw out something hidden, latent, or reserved. And such it is with the olive leaf. When the extract is made, the leaf gives up its essence, and that essence has many miraculous properties.
Protection Against Fungi And Bacteria
One of the more important benefits provided by the oleuropein found in olive leaf extract is its ability to help the body ward off a wide range of potentially serious problems, such as ear infections, urinary tract infections, and others. One study showed that olive leaf extract killed nearly all of the bacteria and fungi that were tested, including candida , dermatophytes and Escherichia coli.3 The latter is better known as E. coli, a bacteria that can lead to severe intestinal problems.

Tooth Abscess Natural Remedies
To tackle an abscessed tooth, first of all, pull oil. You can find the instructions for this here on earthclinic.com. It’s gentle and extremely effective at deep cleaning your teeth. I would suggest using either organic extra virgin olive oil or organic coconut oil for this. Do NOT pull castor oil. It could make you rather ill.
Next, to help relieve the pain, gently massage castor oil into the sore area of your jaw, face and neck. Not inside your mouth, but on your face and neck. You will probably find that the pain will reduce within an hour or so.
The castor oil will penetrate to a depth of approximately 10 centimeters, so it will get into the infected area. Castor oil is antibacterial and will help to clean out the poison. It’s also extremely effective as a painkiller. Sorry, I don’t know why, I just know it works.
If you use the castor oil at night I would suggest wrapping your pillow in an old towel to prevent the oil from staining your bedding.
Oregano Oil For Tooth Abscess: How It Works
Oregano is an aromatic herb that is most commonly used in Italian cuisine. It may be condensed into an essential oil that is high in antioxidants and strong chemicals with well-documented healing properties.
The extract is oregano oil which appears to be beneficial when ingested or applied to the skin. Essential oils, on the other hand, are not intended for human consumption.
Chemical Analysis Of Extracts
The qualitative and quantitative determination of the tested extracts was performed in a HPLC-DAD system: Thermo Finnigan HPLC system coupled with a Spectral System UV6000LP PDA detector. A two-solvent gradient method was used: H2O and acetonitrile. The flow rate was set at 1mL/min and the following elution program was applied: 060min linear gradient from 0% A to 50% B 6065min linear gradient to 100% B 6570min 100% B isocratic 7075min linear gradient to 0% B 7585min 0% B isocratic. The analysis was performed at 25°C and the injection volume was 20L. The detection was done at 280nm and the column used was Supelco Analytical Discovery HS C18 . Standard solutions of oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol were prepared and run under the same conditions in the case of olive leaves and table olive processing wastewater extracts .
Oleuropein Elenolic Acid And Calcium Elenolate
Olives in their natural state are highly bitter. In order to make them palatable, olives traditionally are fermented, cured using water or brine, or packed in salt. These processes leach out and breakdown the bitter glycoside known as oleuropein, as well as various phenolic compounds. Removing these natural substances is important for creating delicious olives. However, these are the very substances that protect the olive tree and its fruits from invasion by insects, microbes, and other pathogens. These substances also provide the antimicrobial and other therapeutic powers of the olive tree for human use.
During the Napoleonic eras Peninsular War between Spain and France , Spanish doctors on the front lines developed a bitter drink made from the ground olive leaf. The bitter green drink was given to wounded soldiers suffering from high fevers. It was found that this drink could reduce a dangerously high fevers to far milder fevers of less than 101 degrees. This drink therefore significantly reduced recovery times for Spanish soldiers and allowed feverish soldiers to continue fighting. The French soon discovered the Spanish febrifuge and began using it for their soldiers.

Determination Of The Minimum Bactericidal Concentration
The minimum bactericidal concentration was also assessed according to the CLSI guidelines . After completion of the MIC assay, the aforementioned 96-well microtiter-plates were further incubated for MBC testing. In brief, 10L from each well containing the tested natural extract concentration series was plated on Columbia blood agar or yeast-cysteine blood agar plates. In particular, the facultative anaerobic bacteria and C. albicans were incubated on CBA plates at 37°C and 5%10% CO2 atmosphere for 2 days. Strictly anaerobic bacteria were cultivated on HCB plates at 37°C for 5 days . The colony forming units were determined visually. The MBC was defined as the concentration at which a three-log decrease in bacterial growth was detected compared to the positive control.
Olive Oil Provides Antioxidant Protection
Oxidative stress is one of the leading causes of tissue destruction in the body, including the tissue in your mouth. This destruction is usually caused by reactive oxygen species , also known as free radicals.
Antioxidants are chiefly beneficial because they neutralize these ROS to less reactive forms, and olive oil is loaded with them.
This study assessed the antioxidant activity of olive oils total polyphenolic fraction, and what they found is quite impressive. Research revealed that olive oil has several biophenols that actively scavenge for free radicals inside the body.
Periodontal tissues are easily damaged by ROS, which can interfere with the integrity of teeth.

Alcohol: Do Not Use Alcohol
Although it is popular, it is an ineffective home remedy. People tend to soak some alcohol in the cotton swab and apply the same to the abscessed area. Alcohol may temporarily numb the pain, but it does not remove the infection. The result will be temporary relief. The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports that the use of alcohol as a pain killer can be extremely dangerous, as the amount of alcohol needed to get numbing effects is often very high. So better to avoid this remedy.
These are some of the remedies that can be used at home to get relief from painful symptoms of abscessed teeth. Although, if each option has its advantages, there are some disadvantages also associated. Therefore, it is better to use every option after gaining a thorough understanding and just for getting temporary relief. After which always have a visit to a nearby dentist as soon as possible.
How Olive Leaf Extract Works
Olive leaf extract is one of natures most powerful antimicrobials. Normally, the task of keeping microbes at bay in the body falls to the immune system. However, there are times when the immune system struggles against bacteria, viruses, or fungi. In fact, increasingly, pharmaceutical antibiotics are becoming ineffective as microbes develop resistance to most classes of these formerly powerful drugs, which also exert harmful side effects on humans.
Olive leaf extract is not a drug or a miracle cure, but rather a natural substance that supports immune system function in ways that surpasses the immune-boosting capabilities of most other natural substances.
Olive leaf extract acts in the following ways to support and maintain health:
1) Olive leaf extract interferes with microbes amino acid processes. That is, calcium elenolate acts to prevent the reproductive processes of many microbes, and this helps to reduce their total number, as well as interferes with their infection processes. Also, there is evidence that olive leaf extract is able to enter infected cells within the body and stop the replication of viruses in cells.
3) Olive leaf extract can directly stimulate phagocytosis. Phagocytosis is an immune system response whereby cells engulf and swallow microorganisms, including microbes and other pathogens.

A Short History Of Olea Europeana L And Its Therapeutic Use
Olive leaf extract derives from the leaves of the olive tree. The olive tree is a species in the ancient Oleaceae botanical family. This family also includes ash, jasmine, and lilac. Olive trees have been cultivated for thousands of years, especially in the Near East and the Mediterranean basin, including areas in Syria, Palestine, and Crete.
Fossil evidence found in Greece, Macedonia, and elsewhere indicates that the genus is native to the Mediterranean and Western Asia. Some evidence exists that it originated in tropical northern Africa and later was introduced to the Mediterranean via Egypt. References to olive trees and olives are plentiful in ancient Greek and Roman literature, and they figure prominently in the Bible, Hebrew Bible, and Quran.
Olive trees can live for thousands of years. Some currently living trees are more than 2,000 years old. A major reason that olive trees live so long are the natural chemicals in its leaves, bark, and fruit that protect them from parasites, insects, and fungi. While they are not 100% percent immune from attacks, they naturally repel invaders, and thereby protect themselves effectively enough to avoid catastrophic infections and infestations.
Discovery Of A Superior Olive Leaf Extract
An important fact is that there is one type of olive leaf extract that is most effective against pathogens. It is a form of olive leaf extract that relies upon a patented process to concentrate active ingredients that cannot be deactivated by proteins in the human bloodstream. This form is the one contained in HPDIs Olive Leaf Extract formula.
For centuries, the active ingredients in olive leaves were unknown. During the 19th century, a phenolic compound known as oleuropein was isolated from olive leaves. It was later determined that this bitter glucoside is present throughout the olive tree, i.e., it its leaves, fruits , bark, and roots.
Botanists consider oleuropein to be the substance that protects the living tree from pests and disease. It helps the olive tree survive for centuries and even for millennia .
In the late 1960s, the Upjohn company isolated the primary antimicrobial ingredient present in oleuropein. This ingredient was the calcium salt elenolic acid, known chemically as calcium elenolate. Calcium elenolate was highly effective against nearly every bacterium, virus, yeast, fungus, and protozoan against which it was tested.
The effectiveness of calcium elenolate, however, remained confined to the test tube because it was determined the proteins in the blood stream bound to it. This rendered calcium elenolate ineffective in the body after just a few minutes.

Measurement Of Tissue Malonedialdehyde Level
Tissue from the left side was kept in a cryotube under liquid nitrogen for subsequent measurement of MDA level as an index of lipid peroxidation. Briefly,200 mg of tissue was homogenized with phosphate buffer solution in the ratio of 1w: 5v. The homogenized tissue was then mixed with 800 L of trichloroacetic acid and centrifuged . Then 600 L of the supernatant was mixed with 150 L of 1% TBA and incubated in water bath for 15 min. After cooling down,6 ml of n-butanol was added and the mixture was centrifuged . Subsequently the absorption of butane phase was measured by spectrophotometerat 532 nm. Tetraetoxy propane was used as control. MDA tissue concentration was calculated with following equation:
In which, AT is absorbance of the test sample and ANC is absorbance of the negative control at 532 nm.
Symptoms Of A Tooth Infection
The most obvious symptom of a tooth infection is pain. Intense, sharp, or shooting pain in a tooth is a good indication that there is an infection that needs to be dealt with. Some of the other common symptoms of a tooth infection are:
Severe, persistent, throbbing toothache that can radiate to the jawbone, neck or ear
Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
Sensitivity to the pressure of chewing or biting
Fever not associated with flu or another illness
Swelling in your face, cheek, or jaw.
Tender, swollen lymph nodes under your jaw or in your neck
Sudden rush of foul-smelling and foul-tasting, salty fluid in your mouth and pain relief, if the abscess ruptures
Difficulty breathing or swallowing

I have to get a new dental policy and get a crown on a molar. As an FYI, if your dental insurance doesn’t cover a root canal or crown due to length of time. You still are given the contracted rate where the dentist cannot charge over a certain amount for the service and crown. Most people don’t know this and many people in admin don’t know this but this is a fact. This can save you hundreds of dollars typically- still going to be expensive but MUCH better than full price.
Okay, so while I am arranging a new dental policy, my tooth that I planned on crowning this month starts REALLY hurting. I did not have an abscess but it must have been inside because that was definitely a sign of infection and it was only going to get worse. I have had a root canal and crown on another tooth 5 years ago and the pain from the infection was beyond agony. Fortunately, I never had problems after the procedure and I have pretty good dental health, but I never want to experience that again so I got busy!
I had recently started taking iodine supplements by capsule and by drops in my water. So I immediately gave myself a super dose for a couple of days to get it going in my system. Still the pain lingered , and I could tell it was starting to become more intense and more frequent. So I got online and started researching what I could do to at least keep the infection under control until I get some Penicillin from my doc so hopefully I won’t need a root canal.
Helping To Maintain The Health Of The Arteries
One of the most important components of overall cardiovascular health is arterial health. The walls of the arteries are lined by a substance known as the endothelium. The cells that make up this lining help to maintain a healthy blood pressure as well as proper circulation. If these cells are damaged, that leads to the early stages of a serious condition known as atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries.
There are several ways in which olive leaf extract can help protect the cells of the endothelium from being damaged. This, in turn, may help provide protection against serious cardiovascular problems. For example, oleuropein helps the body produce nitric oxide, a substance that helps the blood vessels relax.9
In addition, olive leaf extract helps to inhibit the production of molecules known as matrix metalloproteinases . If there is too much MMP activity in the body, that can lead to the destruction of cells in the endothelium. MMP can dissolve the substances that bind cells together, leaving the lining of blood vessels at risk for the accumulation of dangerous plaque.10
Another contributing factor to the development of hardening of the arteries is the accumulation of LDL cholesterol, more commonly referred to as bad cholesterol. Studies indicate that olive leaf extract can inhibit the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, a process that can lead to inflammation of the arteries.11
