How Is Balanitis Diagnosed

Balanitis: discharge instructions

Healthcare providers diagnose balanitis with a physical examination to determine if an infection is causing your symptoms. Your provider may swab your urethral opening and send the sample to a lab for testing. Your provider may also order a urine or blood test to check for diabetes and other infections.

Male Yeast Infection Risk Factors And Causes

Weve already established that yeast infections in men and women are caused by an excess of candida yeast on the skin. Moist, occluded areas are the biggest risk factor, says Dr. Bard. These areas are much for conducive environments for a candida imbalance. But perhaps the more pressing question is: what causes this fungal imbalance? The most common culprit is sexual contact with an affected partner. Again, these fungal infections arent contagious, and theyre not sexually transmitted infections, but a direct encounter with candida overgrowth can affect the skins natural fungal cells.

The good news is that theyre somewhat avoidable. However, certain behaviors, medications, and conditions can drastically increase the chances of developing a candida infection, like:

  • Poor hygiene and cleanliness
  • Having diabetes
  • Using soaps or shower gels that irritate the skin
  • Diseases that suppress the immune system

Avoiding these risk factors can contribute significantly to yeast infection prevention.

How Do People Get Balanitis

The most common cause of balanitis is poor hygiene in uncircumcised males. Other causes include:

  • Genital yeast infection .
  • Scabies infection.
  • Sensitivity or allergy to harsh soaps or chemicals.
  • Skin conditions that cause itchy, dry, scaly skin .
  • Reactive arthritis, a type of arthritis that develops in response to an infection somewhere in the body.

Factors To Consider When Buying Yeast Infection Cream

Jock Itch Treatment Cream (Medical Tips)

Because no one really wants to talk or ask about yeast infections, those looking for a reliable treatment often rely on their understanding of the products available to them this makes it all too easy to purchase all the wrong products that might even do more harm than good.

Keep these factors in mind when you make a purchase will help you determine if a treatment will work positively for your body or not.

  • Treatment Duration. It is easy to find yeast infection treatments that indicate a number of days on the packaging. On the surface, a product that requires fewer days might seem like the best yeast infection cream compared to other options, but thats not always the case.

The reason why some products only need to be used for a shorter amount of time is that they have higher concentrations of the active ingredient. However, because some people are more prone to side-effects, higher doses may only be ideal for those who dont expect to develop adverse reactions.

When selecting a treatment duration, be certain to consider your level of tolerance for these types of products, especially if you plan to purchase chemical-based creams.

The more likely you are to develop side-effects, the better it would be to choose a product that requires a longer time frame of use.

One thing you need to think of, however, when opting for natural remedies is that theyre less likely to give you the results you want as fast as you want them.

How Do You Prevent A Penile Yeast Infection

You can help prevent a penile yeast infection by avoiding sexual contact with a partner who has a yeast infection.

You should also avoid having sex with anyone while you have an active yeast infection, as you could pass the infection back to your partner. This could cause the two of you to pass an infection back and forth.

To lower the risk of getting a yeast infection or passing one along, do the following:

  • Wear an external condom each time you have sex to help reduce your chances of developing a yeast infection.
  • If you are uncircumcised, clean under the foreskin with soap and water, and return your foreskin to its usual position after you have sexual intercourse.

Male Yeast Infection Complications

If your immune system is weak, thereâs a chance that the fungus can spread into your bloodstream. This is a serious condition called invasive candidiasis. The odds are higher when you:

  • Are taking immunosuppressants
  • Have a central venous catheter

A high fever, chills, upset stomach, and headache are all signs that your yeast infection may have spread. If you notice these symptoms, call your doctor right away.

I have a mysterious itch no one can diagnose it is NOT yeast or any other infection that 2 labs can detect.

Jwjena

Do you have lichen sclerosus. That caused itching. Really bad. Most doctors do not know about it.

Sounds like lichen sclerosus – that’s what I have and use it for.

I used this cream and after my labia started burning I stopped. Never use this cream on your lady parts. My Dr assured me that it was safe but only for 2 weeks, and never told me not to use on thin skin. I’m glad I stopped after 6 days. The burning feeling is still there but not as bad. I pray it will slowly go away because this feels so irritating. NEVER use this cream. I’m so mad.

Hey moiknigi,

Clotrimazole is an antifungal cream. Clotrimazole topical is used to treat skin infections such as athlete’s foot, jock itch, ringworm, and yeast infections. You have to continue to use the cream even once the symptoms are gone or the infection may return. You need to use the cream for as long as it was prescribed by the doctor usually two to four weeks, twice a day.

It is best to wear loose fitting clothing preferably cotton while you are treating this condition.

If you are still nervous, please consult the pharmacist or the doctor for further clarification.

Can You Have Sex With A Yeast Infection

While you can physically have sex with a yeast infection, doctors don’t recommend it. For starters, it may not be enjoyable.

“Often with a yeast infection, there’s itching, burning, increased discharge, and it’s an overall uncomfortable process,” says Peace Nwegbo-Banks, MD, an OBG-YN at Serenity Women’s Health & Med Spa in Pearland, Texas. Sex can exacerbate these symptoms, leading to an altogether unpleasant experience.

From a health perspective, yeast infections can also inflame genital tissue, allowing for micro-abrasions to occur during sex, says Nwegbo-Banks. This can cause more pain during intercourse, and any increase in micro-abrasions could lead to a heightened risk of sexually transmitted infections.

Another reason to hold off on sex is that many sexually transmitted infections can present with similar symptoms as a yeast infection. “It’s really important to see your doctor if the yeast infection is not going away, is recurrent, or it’s becoming worse,” Nwegbo-Banks says. This way you can be sure it’s not something more serious.

Even if you are currently undergoing treatment for a yeast infection or just completed treatment, you should still wait a few days before running to the bedroom.

“I usually recommend waiting five to seven days after completion of treatment to make sure that the infection has cleared and symptoms such as itchiness, a cottage cheese-like discharge, inflammation, and irritation are resolved before having intercourse,” says Nwegbo-Banks.

Can Thrush Go Away On Its Own

Sometimes thrush can go away on its own however the infection can worsen and spread to other parts of the body. If you think you have thrush you should visit your doctor, as the symptoms of thrush are very similar to the symptoms caused by sexually transmitted infections . Your doctor will be able to tell you whether you have an STI or thrush, and therefore what treatment or further testing is required. The treatment you are given will depend upon your diagnosis as well as the severity of the infection.

If you have thrush its best that you avoid having sex while the infection and its symptoms are present. Sex can make the infection worse as well as spread it to other parts of your body or to your partner.

If you have never had thrush before, it is best to visit a sexual health clinic or a doctor to check the diagnosis. There are many other causes for balanitis, so it is best to get it checked. A swab can be used to confirm thrush and also exclude other types of infection, such as gonorrhoea.

If you have recurring thrush you may need urine or blood tests to check there is no reason for this. For example, you may be tested for diabetes or for problems with your immune system. Tests for sexually transmitted infections may also be done. Your partner should also be tested for thrush and sexually transmitted infections if the problem keeps coming back.

If you have had thrush before, and you recognise the symptoms, you can buy the treatment from a pharmacy. However, if it is coming back quickly or regularly, you should see a health professional to check for an underlying problem, and to check that your infection is definitely thrush.
