What Are The Differences Between Yeast Infections And Urinary Tract ...

UTIs and yeast infections are very different. UTIs result from bacteria growing in the urinary tract and can be caused by a number of things including improper wiping , wearing a wet bathing suit for too long, and excess moisture surrounding your genitals. The most common symptoms of a UTI are a frequent urge to urinate and a burning sensation when you do. By no means is a UTI on its own considered contagious. But that doesn’t mean the bacteria wont spread. It is possible to pass the bacteria that caused the UTI to your partner and vice versa, which is why doctors recommend waiting to have sex if you have a UTI.vaginal-testing-combo

A yeast infection is the result of an overgrowth of a fungus called candida. Candida lives healthily in your body all the time but can begin to cause problems if it multiplies. Things like stress, lack of sleep, poor eating habits, and a hormonal imbalance can cause the candida fungus to multiply and lead to infection. Also, certain antibiotics have been found to cause yeast infections. Yeast infections are not considered STIs because other things can cause them, but it is possible to get a yeast infection from a partner who has one.

Uti Vs Yeast Infections: Diagnosis & Testing

  • Both UTIs and yeast infections are diagnosed using different means and methods.
  • While yeast infections are often easy to confirm using a straightforward pelvic examination and by taking a detailed history of illness, UTIs require more specific tests.
  • The doctor will also ask you about the nature of the discharge and other related symptoms to confirm their diagnosis.
  • As for UTIs, there exists specific UTI testing to confirm the diagnosis.
  • This often involves collecting a urine sample and examining it to detect bacteria in it.
  • The lab might also use a culture test to ascertain the type of bacteria causing the UTI.
  • Your doctor will also ask questions about your medical history and the color and odor of the urine.
  • Correlating these findings with the test results will provide an accurate diagnosis.
  • Doctors might also suggest both tests if youâre exhibiting symptoms that appear like both conditions.

Causes Of A Yeast Infection

Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of Candida, a microbial fungus. There are small amounts of fungus that naturally occur in a womans reproductive tract but this fungus is kept from overpopulating. The presence of Lactobacillus bacteria prevents fungus from overpopulating creating a yeast overgrowth. When there is an imbalance, yeast begins to grow out of control.

Yes, but always talk with your doctor or nurse before treating yourself for a vaginal yeast infection. This is because:

  • You may be trying to treat an infection that is not a yeast infection. Studies show that two out of three women who buy yeast infection medicine dont really have a yeast infection.2 Instead, they may have an STI or bacterial vaginosis . STIs and BV require different treatments than yeast infections and, if left untreated, can cause serious health problems.
  • Using treatment when you do not actually have a yeast infection can cause your body to become resistant to the yeast infection medicine. This can make actual yeast infections harder to treat in the future.
  • Some yeast infection medicine may weaken condoms and diaphragms, increasing your chance of getting pregnant or an STI when you have sex. Talk to your doctor or nurse about what is best for you, and always read and follow the directions on the medicine carefully.

A UTI is caused when bacteria travel from outside of your body into the urinary tract. This can happen in a variety of ways, and understanding how it happens may be able to help you prevent UTIs in the future.

  • Sex increases your risk of UTIs, as bacteria from the rectum can find its way to the bladder easily.

  • A compromised immune system can lead to greater incidence of UTIs

  • Structural abnormalities in your urinary tract can put you at a greater risk of infections

  • Wiping from the back to the front while on the toilet could introduce bacteria into the urinary tract

Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of candida, a type of yeast or fungus. This fungus is found in your body at all times, but sometimes it can multiply and cause problems.

Causes and/or things that put you at greater risk of candida are generally things that prevent your body from being able to naturally control candida production. Those include:

Wndrwmn23

Yes you definitely can. I currently have both. My stomach and back hurt so bad and felt like fire, nothing I tried would help. I finally got an antibiotic today and hoping to get anti fungal tomorrow.

I went to urgent care thinking it was a painful stomach bug, because I also had diarrhea and felt very weak. They sent me to the ER because of how distended my abdomen was with my symptoms. They worried it was my appendix. In the end, found out my appendix was fine but have a yeast infection and very painful UTI. Its been a long week.

I currently have both a yeast infection AND a UTI. I have been getting both of these at the same time for a little over a month. What did they prescribe you and did it work? I feel like I am about to go crazy because no meds they are giving me are working and I am literally getting a yeast infection and UTI as as soon as I finish the medicine they give me.
