What If I Am Taking Other Medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including any medicines, vitamins or supplements that you buy without a prescription from your pharmacy, supermarket or health food shop.

Some medicines may interfere with Betadine Antiseptic Topical Ointment and affect how it works.

Lithium can interact with Betadine Antiseptic Topical Ointment to affect the function of the thyroid gland. Therefore, concurrent use should be avoided.
Do not use other wound-treatment preparations containing enzymatic components at the same time as a povidone-iodine preparation as this can lead to ineffectiveness of both the preparations. The same thing can happen if disinfectants containing silver, hydrogen peroxide or taurolidine are used at the same time.
Do not use at the same time or immediately after application of octenidine containing antiseptics in the same or adjacent sites, as this may lead to transient dark discolorations in the areas involved.
The use of mercury containing wound-treatment products at the same time with povidone-iodine preparations can lead to the formation of a substance which can damage the skin.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure about what medicines, vitamins or supplements you are taking and if these affect Betadine Antiseptic Topical Ointment.

How To Dress And Bandage A Wound

With the wound suitably clean, its time to dress and bandage it. For small cuts, this can be as easy as putting on a simple adhesive bandage. For larger wounds, though, you may need some additional supplies.

To dress and bandage a wound:

Pick out a sterile bandage: There are many different types of bandages available on the market to accommodate different types and sizes of wounds. For larger wounds, sterile gauze often works well.

Apply antibiotic ointmentto the bandage rather than directly on the wound. This can help prevent infection and keep the wound moist to promote healing.

Place the bandage on the wound. For larger cuts and gouges where the edges of the wound are stretched apart, you may need to apply butterfly bandages or Steri-strips across the cut to hold the edges together prior to putting the bandage on.

Secure the bandagein place: When using a non-adhesive bandage, such as sterile gauze, you need to secure it in place. An adhesive wrap, elastic bandage, roller gauze or waterproof medical tape are all good options.

Change the dressingdaily or more frequently if it becomes wet with blood or fluid. You want to keep the wound clean and moist, not dirty and wet. While changing the dressing, look for signs of infection.

If the wound is on a joint, consider splinting: For example, if the injury is on a knuckle, you may need to splint the finger to keep the edges of the wound from pulling apart.

Home Remedies For Paronychia Or Infected Cuticle

A number of home remedies can help one deal with infected cuticle. These include:

Soaking hands in warm water as soon as you notice onset of redness, swollenness and pain in the cuticle.
Take half a cup of vinegar and equal amount of water in a big bowl and soak your fingers and toes in this. Do this 3 times a day to stay away from paronychia.
Take 2-3 drops of Oregano oil and rub it in your fingers and cuticle to treat and prevent this infection.
Alternatively, you can also use Olive oil to rub in your fingers which will give the same benefits.
Take some warm water and add few drops of lemon juice to it. Now soak your fingers and toes in it to stay away from paronychia.
Grind 8-10 betel leaves and 10 gram of powdered quicklime and make a smooth paste. Apply the paste on the affected nail. You can also tie a clean, dry, cotton cloth around it to let the paste stay longer. This will cure the infected cuticle and also prevent further paronychia.

Take Pressure Off The Area

If a wound continues to reopen or experience damage, it wont heal quickly and may get much worse. So avoid putting stress, pressure and weight on wounds.

This can be tricky for some wounds like ones on your feet. If you need help, talk to your doctor about ways to protect your wounds while maintaining mobility. Special shoes and customized foot padding are common options.

What Is The Reduction Of Finger Dislocation Procedure

If your finger dislocation is not severe, the doctor can immediately fix your finger dislocation by externally manipulating and putting your bone back in its original position. This is known as a closed reduction. Before they do this, you might get a local anesthetic medication to numb your finger.

During the procedure, the doctor will gently restore your finger to its correct position by gently pushing or pulling it. The doctor will do another X-ray to confirm the success of the reduction procedure.
A splint will be wrapped around your affected finger or taping of your affected finger will be done to its adjacent finger to secure the alignment. You need to wear the splint/tape for three to six weeks.

If your finger dislocation is severe that it cannot be manipulated externally, your dislocated finger may need to be repaired surgically. The same reduction will be performed by opening your finger surgically, and the procedure is known as open reduction.

If you have an open fracture in the dislocated finger, you will be put on antibiotics and given a tetanus vaccine.

Looking After Your Medicine

Keep your medicine in a place where the temperature stays below 25Â°C.

Follow the instructions in the carton on how to take care of your medicine properly.

Store it in a cool dry place away from moisture, heat or sunlight for example, do not store it:

in the bathroom or near a sink, or

in the car or on window sills.

Keep it where young children cannot reach it.

Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste.

Without proper treatment, something as simple as a scraped knee or a little nick on a finger can quickly become infected and require you to head home to see a doctor.

To treat cuts, scrapes and abrasions, follow these general steps:

Control the bleeding: Apply direct pressure or use a pressure dressing to stop bleeding.

Clean the wound: Scrub and irrigate the wound to remove contaminants that could possibly cause infection.

Dress and bandage the wound: Use sterile gauze and a bandage to cover the wound.

Monitor the wound for infection: Even a minor cut can become infected so you need to keep an eye out and respond quickly if you see redness, pus or swelling at the site of the injury.

Can We Prevent Staph Skin Infections

What Should I Do If I Have A Finger Ulcer

If you are taking medication to improve blood flow, make sure you are taking it as prescribed. The following recommendations for ulcer care are provided as general guidelines. You should always talk to your doctor for specific information about your ulcers.

Proper care of the ulcer is vital to healing.

Keep the ulcer clean and protected.
Use a liquid antiseptic, such as BetadineÂ® or ProvidineÂ®, diluted in water. Apply two to three times per day. Ointments should be used sparingly and are sometimes discouraged, as they may soften and weaken the healthy tissue surrounding the ulcer. This may slow healing and may actually increase the size of the ulcer. If you do use an ointment, put only a small amount just on the ulcer.
Keep the ulcer moist with agents such as VaselineÂ®.
Keep the ulcer covered with a fabric bandage. Plastic band aids cause softening and breakdown of the healthy tissue around the ulcer and may result in worsening of the ulcer. Fabric bandages work best.
Change the bandage every time it gets wet!
Ulcers may develop a hard surface, or scab, that will make it difficult for the tissue edges to mend together. If this occurs, a chemical to soften the scab, such as SilvadeneÂ® cream, may be prescribed. It should be applied as directed.

Proper care will minimize the risk of infection however, even with the best care, infections can occur. Infections must be treated promptly with antibiotics.

What Is The Best Antiseptic For An Ingrown Toenail

One of the best antiseptics for an infected ingrown toenail is Povidone-iodine. The most common brand name for this antiseptic in Australia is Betadine, and it can be found at your local pharmacy or most supermarkets. Be sure to choose the liquid version and not the gel the liquid preparation can seep around the nail edge and into the sulci more effectively as well as act as an astringent . Many ingrown toenails can start or be perpetuated by too much moisture in the sulci, so a liquid with a drying effect is going to be more effective than a cream based antiseptic.

A warm salt water soak can be used in conjunction with Povidone-iodine and adds to the overall effectiveness of combating a local infection.

The toenail piercing the adjacent skin is what leads to infection, so if the nail hasnt been addressed , or other causes eliminated , antiseptic treatment will likely only serve to control the infection rather than fully eliminate it.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Nail Infection

Symptoms of paronychia usually develop over several hours or days. Sometimes they take longer to develop. Symptoms appear where the nail meets the skin . The sides of the nail can also be affected.

Paronychia symptoms include:

Pain, swelling and tenderness around the nail.
Skin that is red and warm to the touch.
Pus that builds up under the skin. A white to yellow, pus-filled abscess may form. If an abscess forms, it may require antibiotics and/or drainage.

Untreated, the nail can start to grow abnormally and may have ridges or waves. It may look yellow or green, and it can be dry and brittle. The nail can detach from the nail bed and fall off.

Its Been Longer Than Four Weeks

If wounds dont heal within a month, they are considered chronic wounds. While its possible for chronic wounds to heal on their own, its best to get a doctors help to identify why the wound isnt healing and provide treatment.

How Should I Use Betadine

Use exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor.

Betadine is available in many different forms, such as a liquid, ointment, aerosol powder, cream, spray, swab, and soap. Read and carefully follow any Instructions for Use provided with your medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you do not understand these instructions.

Always follow directions on the medicine label about using this medicine on a child. Some forms of povidone iodine topical should not be used in children of certain ages.

Betadine is usually applied to the skin as needed. First clean the area to be treated.

Shake Betadine spray well just before each use.

Allow the medicine to dry completely on the skin before applying a bandage. Do not apply a tight bandage.

Do not use this medicine on deep wounds, puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns. Do not apply over large skin areas.

When treating an infection, you may be given antibiotic medication to take by mouth. Use all medicines for the full prescribed length of time, even if your symptoms quickly improve.

Betadine used in the mouth may be used up to 4 times per day. How often you can use this medicine depends on what form you use. Follow all directions on the medicine label.

Do not use Betadine in the mouth if you are using a form that is made for use only on the skin.

To use Betadine as a mouth rinse, gargle or swish the liquid for 30 seconds, then spit it out. Do not swallow the liquid. Use up to 4 times per day.

How To Cure An Infected Finger

If you’ve ever had an infected finger you know how horribly bad it hurts. Infected fingers can be dangerous if puss should get into your blood stream, but they are also very curable by using a simple home remedy. Want to cure that infected finger as quick as possible, here’s how…

If you are experiencing serious medical symptoms, seek emergency treatment immediately.

Boil a teapot of water on the stove. Pour some boiling water into a shallow cup.

Measure a 1/3 cup of Epsom salt and pour into your cup of a boiling water. Stir until Epsom salt dissolves.

Let the cup of water cool down until you can stick your infected finger into it at the highest temperature you can stand. Let the infected finger soak as long as possible.

At some point after the finger has soaked for a good long while you should see puss from the infected finger start to seep out. You may want to help squeeze some of the puss out of the finger after it’s soaked in the Epsom salt water. The water helps soften and prune the finger making it easier to force the puss out.

You may need to do this proceedure several times to remove all the puss. Between those times use “Neosporin” and wrap your infected finger up with a Band Aid.

Tips

Keep the water as warm to hot as possible while your infected finger soaks. After a while you can prick the infected area with a CLEAN STERILE needle if needed Epsom salt and Neosporin seem to draw puss out.
