What Is Causing My Ears To Ring

Ear ringing is a condition that is perceived only by the person experiencing it. Some people may hear high-pitched sounds, others may hear a clicking, while others may experience something totally different. When someone complains of ringing, buzzing, or clicking in their ears it is called tinnitus.

Ringing in your ears has many causes. If you’ve just attended a concert and you’re wondering why your ears are ringing, you’ll be happy to know that the ringing will likely go away in a day or two.

The bad news is you likely suffered some mild hearing loss from being exposed to loud noise over a significant period of time. Loud noise is just one cause of ear ringing , other causes include the following.

When Tinnitus Is Likely To Disappear By Itself

Around the globe, nearly everybody has had a bout of tinnitus because its extremely common. In virtually all situations, tinnitus is basically temporary and will eventually vanish by itself. A rock concert is a good example: you go see Bruce Springsteen at your local arena and when you go home, you discover that there is ringing in your ears.

Within a couple of days the kind of tinnitus connected to injury from loud noise will normally disappear .

Eventually hearing loss can go from temporary or acute to permanent or chronic because of this exact type of damage. Too many of those kinds of concerts and you could wind up with permanent tinnitus.

The Condition Of Temporary Tinnitus

Around the globe, nearly everybody has had a bout of tinnitus because its very common. Tinnitus is a non-permanent condition, in most situations, and will ultimately vanish by itself. A rock concert is a good illustration: you go see Bruce Springsteen at your local stadium and when you get home, you notice that there is ringing in your ears.

Within a couple of days the type of tinnitus related to damage from loud noise will usually disappear .

Naturally, its precisely this type of noise damage that, over time, can cause hearing loss to go from temporary to chronic. One concert too many and you may be waiting quite a while for your tinnitus to subside on its own.

Diagnosis involves obtaining a detailed case history followed by physical examination of the head and neck region. Specialized tests such as hearing evaluation, audiometry tests, TMJ evaluation, imaging tests may be done to trace out the underlying cause of the condition. Treatment is planned based on the accrual cause of the issue.

Medications often do not help in management of this condition however, medications such as tricyclic anti-depressants and alprazolam may be prescribed for management of the secondary symptoms. Conductive Hearing Loss From Chronic Ear Infections

Chronic ear infections can cause conductive hearing loss. When this happens, the sound waves going to the inner ear are not strong enough. The ear has mechanisms along the canal that amplify the sound wave so by the time it reaches the tiny hair cells of the inner ear, it is strong enough to create a vibration. When you have conductive hearing loss, something changes along that route and the sound isnt amplified quite as much.

Bacteria dont just sit and do nothing inside the ear when you have an ear infection. The mechanisms that amplify sound waves are broken down and eaten by the bacteria. The damage is in most cases done to the tiny little bones and the eardrum. It doesnt take very much to destroy these fragile bones. Once they are gone, they stay gone. Thats permanent damage and your hearing wont return on its own. In some cases, surgeons can install prosthetic bones to restore hearing. The eardrum can repair itself but it might have scar tissue influencing its ability to vibrate. Surgery can correct that, also.

How Does Whiplash Cause Tinnitus

There are primary as well as secondary causes that can give rise to tinnitus after whiplash. After looking at the long list of causes above, direct trauma to the head such as hitting the side window, the back of the seat, the steering wheel, mirror and/or windshield makes obvious sense.

Secondary causes often involve the TMJ or jaw which is commonly injured in whiplash. By itself, TMJ can cause ear pain, tinnitus, vertigo , hearing loss, and headaches.

Because many nerves that innervate the neck and head arise from the neck as well as from the cranial nerves, spinal manipulation of the neck as well as certain cranial manipulations can have a dramatic benefit in the treatment of whiplash induced tinnitus.

This said, if you experience ongoing exposure to noise or have an underlying medical condition that can cause this symptom, it may, in these cases, be permanent.

What Is Middle Ear Infection

The ear is made up of three different sections: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. These parts all work together so you can hear and process sounds. The outer and middle ear are separated by the eardrum a very thin piece of skin that vibrates when hit by sound waves.

This page deals with middle ear infection , which is the infection / inflammation of the air-filled space behind the eardrum that contains the tiny vibrating bones of the ear. This space can become blocked and filled with mucus , which can become infected, causing inflammation.

There are two types of middle ear infection:

  • An acute infection that starts suddenly and lasts for a short period of time and
  • A chronic ear infection that does not get better or keeps coming back. Chronic ear infection can result in long-term damage to the ear.

Sometimes gel-like fluid will remain in the middle ear after an ear infection, causing “glue ear“, a relatively common condition that is often undetected among New Zealand pre-schoolers. Glue ear can adversely affect hearing and may take several weeks to resolve.

Outer ear infection is characteristically different to middle ear infection. This is a skin infection in the outer ear canal, which may start as an itch and develop into infection causing inflammation. Sometimes referred to as swimmers ear, this kind of infection can normally be treated effectively with ear drops from your doctor or pharmacist.
