SWAN LAKE | LARVA | Cartoons for Kids | WildBrain Kids

  • Sex can spread the yeast infection. Yeast infections are quite contagious, so you want to avoid passing it on to others if possible. If your partner is not infected with yeast, he or she could still get an infection from having sex with someone who has one .
  • There is contact between mucous membranes inside various body partssomething which happens frequently when engaging in intercourse without protection from infections or diseases. The Bottom Line About Yeast Infections

The good news is that most yeast infections are easily treated with antifungal creams or suppositories purchased over the counter or through prescription.

If you think you have a vaginal yeast infection, speak with your doctor to discuss your treatment options.

Its not recommended for women to use OTC creams before getting diagnosed by their doctors, because the symptoms of yeast infections are similar to those of other vaginal infections, such as bacterial vaginosis.

Most yeast infections subside within a few days after treatment starts.

Some Candida Species Are Resistant To Drugs

Though azoles work well against C. albicans, some other Candida species are resistant to these first-line drugs.

For example, about half of C. glabrata strains isolated from recurrent yeast infections are far less susceptible to fluconazole than C. albicans, and C. krusei is completely resistant to it.

To treat non-albicans yeast infections, your doctor may prescribe a Mycostatin vaginal cream or tablet, which you must apply or take daily for 14 days.

With treatment, your yeast infection will pass after one to seven days .

If a week is too long for you, you can also try a single dose of a powerful azole oral medication fluconazole, if appropriate.

Other antifungals, such as amphotericin B and flucytosine, are also available for the treatment of non-albicans yeast infections.

    Medication For Treating Yeast Infections

Standard medicines for yeast infections are all a part of the class of antifungal drugs called azoles. They include:

Treatments last one, three, or seven days, all of which are equally effective. Unless you have an allergic reaction to the medication, side effects are generally mild.

You should not use tampons while using the suppositories and creams. You should also avoid condoms and diaphragms because the medicines contain oil, which can degrade the contraceptives.

Having sex while being treated for a yeast infection is not generally recommended because it may worsen symptoms and cause micro-tears in your skin that increase your risk of catching a sexually transmitted disease.

Diflucan is a prescription pill for yeast infections. Most women only require a single dose of the medication to clear their yeast infection, but fluconazole is not recommended for pregnant women due to a potential risk of harming the developing baby.

Fluconazole may cause mild and infrequent side effects, such as headache, rash, and upset stomach. More rarely, severe side effects may develop, such as flu-like symptoms, swelling, and seizures.

Conditions Treated By Monistat Vs Diflucan

    FemiClear Yeast Infection Treatment

Monistat formulations are intended for the treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis in females who have been previously diagnosed with a vaginal yeast infection and are having recurring symptoms. Monistat is not intended for use by anyone who has never been diagnosed with a vaginal yeast infection. Women who are having first-time symptoms consistent with a vaginal yeast infection but have never been diagnosed should be evaluated by a physician first.

Diflucan is also indicated for the treatment of vaginal yeast infections but has a variety of other approved uses by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration which include candida growth in the urinary tract, abdomen, heart, esophagus, oral cavity, blood, and bone. Diflucan may also be used in the treatment of fungal growth on the nails and feet. Patients who are immunocompromised may benefit from prophylactic treatment with Diflucan to prevent fungal overgrowth. A rare condition, cryptococcal meningitis, may also be treated with Diflucan. A Diflucan treatment duration for vaginal yeast infections can range from one to fourteen days depending on the treatment history and complexity of the patientâs infection.

What Are The Risks Associated With Antifungal Drugs

Antifungal drugs that are applied to the skin or mucous membranes are generally well tolerated. The possible side effects include further irritation of the inflamed areas, burning and itching.

When using mechanical contraceptive devices, its important to read the package insert carefully. Some antifungal drugs are oily. This can make contraceptives like condoms more porous, allowing sperm to pass through them.

If antifungal drugs are taken in the form of tablets that you swallow, they can lead to other side effects such as headaches, dizziness, nausea and diarrhea. There are also a lot of medications that shouldnt be used together with antifungal drugs because they may influence each others effect. These include certain medicines, blood-pressure-lowering drugs and medications for psychological problems. You can find out about these drug-drug interactions in the package insert that comes with the antifungal drug.

Applying Oils Down There Might Not Be The Best Remedy Either

Other natural remedies for yeast infections you may hear about are coconut oil and tea tree oil. But take caution, the docs say. I would suggest you avoid the tea tree oil or coconut oil in the vaginal area because research doesnt suggest they work, and they may cause more harm than good, says Dr. Rainford. Tea tree oil can actually be irritating if you put it near your vulva. And coconut oil, while generally safe for your skin, is not consistently effective at curing yeast, Dr. Sophocles points out.

    Candiduria In Clinically Unstable Patients

For critically ill patients, candiduria, whether symptomatic or not, should initially be regarded as a harbinger of disseminated candidiasis , since the kidney is the target of candidemia in 80% of patients . Indeed, the finding of yeast in the urine may be the only clue that the patient has a life-threatening infection. It follows that an astute physician will immediately consider disseminated candidiasis in such a patient and examine the optic fundi, the skin, and vascular access devices and obtain fungal blood cultures. Fortunately, most patients are not fungemic even when desperately ill, and their urinary tract is simply colonized by Candida, especially if an indwelling bladder catheter is present.

If the candiduric patients clinical condition is too unstable to permit an incremental approach to determine its cause or if clinical evidence for disseminated candidiasis is sufficiently compelling, systemic antifungal chemotherapy should be given immediately with fluconazole in a loading dose of 800 mg followed by 400 mg daily or with appropriate adjustment for renal insufficiency. An echinocandin is preferred if the patient has had recent azole exposure . The reader is reminded that an echinocandin has proven efficacy in disseminated candidiasis but cannot be expected to completely eradicate resultant lower urinary tract foci of infection. In the unusual circumstance in which the collecting system is the source of candidemia , relapse could occur.
