Medical Conditions & Treatments : How to Prevent Yeast Infections While Taking Antibiotics

Follow these tips to reduce your risk of developing a yeast infection, regardless of whether youre taking antibiotics:

  • Change out of wet bathing suits and underwear as soon as possible. Yeast thrives in moist environments.
  • Avoid hot tubs and very hot baths. The only thing yeast loves more than a moist environment is a warm one.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing. While theres no clear link between tight clothing and yeast infections, tight pants can increase heat and moisture around your vulva.
  • Wear breathable, cotton underwear. Cotton underwear can help keep things cool and dry down there.
  • Douching removes healthy bacteria.
  • Avoid vaginal deodorant products. This includes sprays, powders, and scented pads and tampons.
  • If you have diabetes, keep your blood sugar under control.High blood sugar levels encourage yeast growth.

Should I See A Doctor

If your yeast infection doesnt improve after treatment, you should consult your doctor. OTC antifungal creams can take up to 10 days to treat a yeast infection.

You should make an appointment if you get recurrent yeast infections, which refers to having four or more yeast infections a year. These usually require prescription treatment because yogurt and other home remedies arent effective for this type of yeast infection.

If youre still having symptoms after this point, you could have a different condition, such as bacterial vaginosis. This is a bacterial infection with symptoms very similar to those of a yeast infection. But because its not caused by a fungus, it wont respond to antifungal treatments.

Preventing Oral And Throat Thrush

Preventing oral and throat thrush requires a combination of good oral hygiene practices. Antifungal drugs may also be used to treat recurring infections. Heres how to prevent oral and throat thrush:

  • Address dry mouth to prevent plaque formation and yeast growth. Here are some remedies.
  • Brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day, every day.
  • Clean your dentures regularly.

Changing Your Diet May Help Prevent Yeast Infections

There’s some evidence that sugar may help promote the growth of yeast.

Yeast’s affinity for sweets has prompted some experts to suggest that diet may be a risk factor for some women when it comes to developing yeast infections.

In fact, some people follow a so-called yeast infection diet or candida diet on the theory that eliminating certain foods may eliminate or at least greatly reduce the risk of yeast overgrowth.

Proponents of these regimens claim that a yeast infection diet can help to cure or prevent yeast infections by eliminating:

  • Foods containing simple sugars, including many fruits
  • White flour and other glutenous grains
  • Anything fermented with yeast, such as alcoholic drinks
  • Some dairy products, including whole milk

The diet recommends sticking to foods like green vegetables, protein , nuts, and herbal tea.

While anecdotal evidence abounds, the candida diet is not supported by rigorous scientific research.

Cfus And Diversity Of Bacteria

The first thing to look for is the number of colony forming units or CFUs. This indicates the number of live, active cultures in each capsule. The more, the better. In general, you want a product that has at least one billion CFUs.

The Lactobacillus genus is the most common type of good bacteria found in probiotics and its also the most studied. Some of the most popular strains include L. acidophilus, L. rhamnosus, and L. reuteri.

Other strains to look for include Bifidobacterium and Saccharomyces boulardii. Bifidobacterium is another type of good bacteria thats commonly found in probiotics. Its been shown to be effective at treating diarrhea, constipation, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome . Antibiotics cause significant damage to your body by killing good bacteria. So, you should always avoid using antibiotics on regular terms.

If you are relying on antibiotics for healing, then it will do more worse to your body. So, it would be best if you always asked for a better alternative than antibiotics. It will be better if you try something natural for dealing with the bad bacteria in your body.

  • Antibiotics deplete the populations of friendly bacteria in the gut and may cause digestive issues so its important to select probiotics to take with antibiotics, dont wait until the course has finished.
  • If taking Lactobacillus acidophilus Rosell-52, Lactobacillus rhamnosus Rosell-11 and Bifidobacterium lactis Lafti B94 then take them with breakfast. These strains can be taken at the SAME time as your antibiotic if this is also at breakfast-time.
