1. What Fluconazole 150 mg Capsules are and what they are used for

Fluconazole, the active ingredient, belongs to a group of medicines called anti-fungal agents and it is used to treat infections caused by fungi and may also be used to stop you from getting a candidal infection. The most common cause of fungal infections is yeast called Candida.

Vaginal yeast infections are a relatively common and very treatable condition that many women face. Aug. 25, 2005 — Most women experience vaginal yeast infections at some point in their lives, but an unfortunate few get them again and again. Preventing repeated infections has been an elusive goal for the roughly 5% of women who have recurrent vaginal yeast infections, but new research should change that.

The antifungal drug Diflucan, taken just once a week, was found to reduce the frequency of infections by more than 90% in a six-month study involving nearly 400 women with a history of recurrent candidavaginal infections.

Researcher Jack D. Sobel, MD, tells WebMD that the drug represents the first safe and highly effective preventive therapy for women with recurrent vaginal yeast infections, defined as those occurring four or more times a year.

“The responses we saw in this study were remarkable,” he says. “For many patients, this treatment gave them back a normal life.”

It usually starts to work within one day, but it may take 3 days for your symptoms to improve and up to 7 days for your symptoms to disappear.

This medication may be available under multiple brand names and/or in several different forms. Any specific brand name of this medication may not be available in all of the forms or approved for all of the conditions discussed here. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here.

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.

Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to take this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.

How Should This Medicine Be Used

Fluconazole comes as a tablet and a suspension to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day, with or without food. You may need to take only one dose of fluconazole, or you may need to take fluconazole for several weeks or longer. The length of your treatment depends on your condition and on how well you respond to fluconazole. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take fluconazole exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Your doctor may tell you to take a double dose of fluconazole on the first day of your treatment. Follow these directions carefully.

Shake the liquid well before each use to mix the medication evenly.

You should begin to feel better during the first few days of treatment with fluconazole. If your symptoms do not improve or get worse, call your doctor.

Continue to take fluconazole until your doctor tells you that you should stop, even if you feel better. Do not stop taking fluconazole without talking to your doctor. If you stop taking fluconazole too soon, your infection may come back after a short time.

How And When To Take Fluconazone

Follow the advice from your doctor. If you buy fluconazole in a pharmacy, follow the instructions that come with the medicine.

It’s important to complete the course of medicine even if you feel better.

You can take fluconazole capsules and liquid with or without food.

Fluconazole capsules are either 50mg, 150mg or 200mg. Swallow the capsules whole with a drink of water. It is best to take your capsules at the same time each day.

The liquid usually comes in 2 different strengths:

• 50mg fluconazole in a 5ml spoonful
• 200mg fluconazole in a 5ml spoonful

Use the plastic spoon that comes with your medicine to measure your dose. Do not use a kitchen teaspoon, as this will not give you the right amount.

A person should contact a doctor if they suspect that they have a yeast infection. The symptoms can be similar to those of other conditions. The doctor can properly diagnose and treat a yeast infection.

If a yeast infection does not clear up with treatment, the person should seek further medical advice. They may need to adjust their medications to treat any itching and discomfort.

What If I Forget To Take A Dose

If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s nearly time for your next dose. In this case, just skip the missed dose and take your next one as normal.

Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

If you forget doses often, it may help to set an alarm to remind you. You could also ask your pharmacist for advice on other ways to remember your medicines.

Before Taking This Medicine

You should not use Diflucan if you are allergic to fluconazole.

Many drugs can interact and cause dangerous effects. Some drugs should not be used together with fluconazole. Your doctor may change your treatment plan if you also use:

• heart problems or

• if you are allergic to other antifungal medicine .

The liquid form of Diflucan contains sucrose. Talk to your doctor before using Diflucan oral suspension if you have a problem digesting sugars or milk.

Fluconazole may harm an unborn baby. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy while taking this medicine and for at least 1 week after your last dose.

It may not be safe to breastfeed while using this medicine. Ask your doctor about any risk.
