Monistat Vs Diflucan: Differences Similarities And Which Is Better For You
Vaginal yeast infections are a relatively common and very treatable condition that many women face. These infections are typically caused by an overgrowth of a fungal group known as candida albicans, which is present in the normal vaginal flora of most women. When certain conditions allow the overgrowth of vaginal candida, also known as candidiasis, it leads to symptoms that may include vaginal tenderness, itching, discharge, and/or odor. The sensitivity of this condition leaves many women looking for a quick and effective treatment option. Monistat and Diflucan are two treatment options for vulvovaginal candidiasis.
Replenish Your Good Bacteria
Antibiotics attack good bacteria all over your body. You may be able to undo some of this damage by increasing the number of good bacteria in your body.
Consider taking a probiotic supplement containing Lactobacillus, like this one. You can also try adding some yogurt containing live active cultures to your diet. Heres a guide to brands containing Lactobacillus acidophilus.
An Allergic Reaction Or Sensitivity
Your vaginal area is sensitive, which means it may be sensitive to certain products you use.
As with other parts of the body, the vulvar and vaginal areas can develop a contact dermatitis reaction to detergents, lotions, soaps and creams that you use Dr. Nelson said. In addition, depending on what products you use, they can also alter the which can lead to increased risk of infections like bacterial vaginosis.
This kind of vaginal irritation is known as noninfectious vaginitis. It can cause itching and burning and vaginal discharge.
Treatment: Treating an allergic reaction or sensitivity will depend on whats causing the symptoms and then eliminating them to see if symptoms resolve. Sometimes short courses of steroid creams can help with the itching.
Prevention Of Vaginal Yeast Infection
Women who are at high risk of a yeast infection may need to take an antifungal drug by mouth to help prevent yeast infections. Such women include those with the following:
A need to take antibiotics for a long time
Repeated yeast infections, particularly in women with a weakened immune system
Keeping the vulva clean and wearing loose, absorbent cotton clothing that allows air to circulate can reduce moisture, which encourages the growth of yeast, and thus help prevent yeast from growing.

Diflucan Prevents Yeast Infections
Aug. 25, 2005 — Most women experience vaginal yeast infections at some point in their lives, but an unfortunate few get them again and again. Preventing repeated infections has been an elusive goal for the roughly 5% of women who have recurrent vaginal yeast infections, but new research should change that.
The antifungal drug Diflucan, taken just once a week, was found to reduce the frequency of infections by more than 90% in a six-month study involving nearly 400 women with a history of recurrent candidavaginal infections.
Researcher Jack D. Sobel, MD, tells WebMD that the drug represents the first safe and highly effective preventive therapy for women with recurrent vaginal yeast infections, defined as those occurring four or more times a year.
“The responses we saw in this study were remarkable,” he says. “For many patients, this treatment gave them back a normal life.”

What To Expect From Prescription Treatment
If you have severe symptoms or OTC medication doesnt clear up your infection, you may need a prescription medication. Your healthcare provider may also recommend taking antifungal medications regularly if you get frequent yeast infections.
Prescription yeast infection medications, such as fluconazole , are taken by mouth. Youll usually only need one dose, but you may be prescribed two doses for very severe symptoms.
Other prescription yeast infection treatments include vaginal antifungal medications you can use for up to two weeks.
Your doctor may also recommend boric acid, another vaginal treatment, that can help treat yeast infections that dont respond to antifungal medications.
If you get a yeast infection while pregnant, OTC topical treatments can provide relief. Your healthcare provider wont prescribe fluconazole, as it can increase the risk of birth defects.
Still, its important to follow up with your healthcare provider if youre pregnant and have a yeast infection thats not getting better.
Dosage For Nonvaginal Candidiasis
- Typical dosage: Depending on the type of infection you have, your daily dose could be between 50 mg and 400 mg.

- Typical dosage: Dosage depends on the weight of the child taking the drug, and the type of infection being treated.
- Treatment length: The length of treatment depends on the infection being treated.
Use of this drug isnt recommended in infants younger than 6 months.
The kidneys of older adults may not work as well as they used to. This can cause your body to process drugs more slowly. As a result, more of a drug stays in your body for a longer time. This raises your risk of side effects. Your doctor may start you on a lowered dose or a different dosing schedule. This can help keep levels of this drug from building up too much in your body.

Should I Call My Doctor Or Nurse If I Think I Have A Yeast Infection
Yes. Seeing your doctor or nurse is the only way to know for sure if you have a yeast infection and not a more serious type of infection.
The signs and symptoms of a yeast infection are a lot like symptoms of other more serious infections, such as STIs and bacterial vaginosis . If left untreated, STIs and BV raise your risk of getting other STIs, including HIV, and can lead to problems getting pregnant. BV can also lead to problems during pregnancy, such as premature delivery.
