This raises your risk of side effects. Your doctor may start you on a lowered dose or a different dosing schedule. This can help keep levels of this drug from building up too much in your body.

Diflucan Prevents Yeast Infections

Aug. 25, 2005 — Most women experience vaginal yeast infections at some point in their lives, but an unfortunate few get them again and again. Preventing repeated infections has been an elusive goal for the roughly 5% of women who have recurrent vaginal yeast infections, but new research should change that.

The antifungal drug Diflucan, taken just once a week, was found to reduce the frequency of infections by more than 90% in a six-month study involving nearly 400 women with a history of recurrent candidavaginal infections.

Researcher Jack D. Sobel, MD, tells WebMD that the drug represents the first safe and highly effective preventive therapy for women with recurrent vaginal yeast infections, defined as those occurring four or more times a year.

“The responses we saw in this study were remarkable,” he says. “For many patients, this treatment gave them back a normal life.”

How Long Do Penile Yeast Infections Last

This depends on how advanced the yeast infection is, how fast you treat it, and how well it responds to medication. If you treat the infection with over-the-counter meds, youll usually apply these for one to three weeks.2 Ideally, this will be enough to make the yeast infection go away for good. If that doesnt do the trick, youll need to see your doctor for next steps and an updated timeline. Youll most likely need to take a single dose of oral antifungal medication, or, if symptoms are severe, two single doses, three days apart, according to the Mayo Clinic.

How Much Fluconazole Should I Take

Fluconazole is sold in single packs containing one 150mg dosage, which should be enough to clear your fungal infection within 7 days. If it doesnt, its very important to contact your doctor for help moving forward. Its also important to contact your doctor if you take over the recommended dosage or if your symptoms have gotten worse during the 7 days since you took the capsule. If your symptoms clear up but then return after the 7 days, you can take another 150mg dosage provided you did not suffer from any serious side effects or allergic reaction during the first cycle of treatment. If you have more than two bouts of thrush or any fungal infection within a 6 month period, it is important to contact your doctor and you should avoid a third dosage of Fluconazole in a short time period.

What Is Penile Candidiasis

The most common cause of penile candidiasis is the fungus Candida albicans. Candida is present in the human body but is usually well controlled by the immune system.

On occasion, however, the fungus can overgrow if the immune system is suppressed or the natural balance of microorganisms on the skin is disrupted.

Some people with penile candidiasis have no symptoms. Those that do may experience:

When balanitis in uncircumcised men is severe, it can lead to the inability to retract the foreskin or the inability to return the foreskin to its normal position . Paraphimosis is a medical emergency.

It helps to see a doctor if the symptoms are severe or unusual. If the problem is related to a tight foreskin, circumcision may be recommended.

If you decide to self treat and OTC treatments don’t work, or the yeast infection recurs, its important to see a doctor for an evaluation.

There may be an underlying cause for the infection, including undiagnosed diabetes, an underactive thyroid , HIV, or penile cancer.

Yeast Infection Treatment For Men

How to Cure Yeast Infections in Men

Yeast infections in men should be treated similarly to those in women, says Aragona.

Oral antifungal medications like fluconazole are the best treatment for most penile yeast infections, says Mordkin. However, he cautions that more severe cases may necessitate the use of intravenous medications.

If you are exhibiting signs of a yeast infection, it is recommended that you visit a doctor immediately. “Particularly in a man with diabetes, medical evaluation and possible treatment should be pursued so that the infection can be brought under control rather than advancing into a more serious situation,” says Mordkin.

If left untreated, penile yeast infections can lead to numerous adverse health effects including:

  • The skin turns hard and white, making it difficult to urinate.
  • A greater risk of developing balanoposthitis, a condition in which the foreskin and glands become inflamed.

In rare cases, a severe course of action involving surgical circumcision may also occur, Mordkin explains. The latter is recommended when a person has recurring yeast infections, usually the result of incredibly tight foreskin.

Important: Anyone who believes that they have a yeast infection can also visit a sexual health clinic to obtain a prescription for antifungal medicine. Once treatment begins, Aragona says the yeast infection should resolve itself within a week.
