WHY I STOPPED TAKING ANTIBIOTICS FOR ACNE ( And you should too)

Health screenings can give you a snapshot of whats happening inside your body at a given time and can provide additional pieces of information on the state of your health. While doctors can help keep patients on track and up to date with their health screenings, it’s also important that patients are empowered to play an active role in their healthcare and can advocate for the tests and screenings they need.

When To Visit An Ent

You may opt to visit an ENT if your sinus infection symptoms last more than one month. However, when a lingering sinus infection after antibiotics lasts more than 12 weeks, its definitely time to see a specialist.

If your doctor has treated you with antibiotics, saline, steroid sprays, antihistamines, and decongestants and youre still not better, youve entered into a confusing area. You need a thorough exam of your sinus pathways with a fiberoptic scope and a CT scan to properly diagnose the problem.

If at any point youre not sure whats going on and your primary care doctor isnt sure whats causing the symptoms, see an ENT for a more specialized exam.

How To Use Minocycline Hcl

Read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist before you start taking minocycline and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

This medication is best taken on an empty stomach. Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually every 12 hours, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Take this medication with a full glass of water unless your doctor directs you otherwise. If stomach upset occurs, taking it with food or milk may help. However, minocycline may not work as well if you take it with food or milk, so ask your doctor or pharmacist if you may take it that way. If you are taking the capsules, swallow them whole. Do not lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking this medication. For this reason, do not take it right before bedtime.

Take this medication 2 to 3 hours before or after taking any products containing aluminum, calcium, iron, magnesium, or zinc. Some examples include antacids, didanosine solution, quinapril, vitamins/minerals, dairy products , and calcium-enriched juice. These products bind with minocycline, preventing your body from fully absorbing the drug.

The dosage and length of treatment are based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

For the best effect, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times. To help you remember, take this medication at the same times every day.

Tell your doctor if your condition lasts or gets worse.

Drug Interactions Of Minocycline Vs Doxycycline

Minocycline Hcl : Precautions

Minocycline and doxycycline are both antibiotics from the same class of tetracyclines, and their list of potential drug interactions is similar. Common antacids containing aluminum hydroxide, such as Gaviscon, may impair the absorption of minocycline and doxycycline. This can lead to a decreased efficacy of minocycline and doxycycline. To avoid this interaction, antacids should not be taken with these antibiotics. Ideally, there would be at least two hours between the administration of an antacid and either minocycline or doxycycline.

Tetracycline antibiotics such as minocycline and doxycycline interfere with the bactericidal action of another common antibiotic class, penicillins. This class includes common antibiotics such as amoxicillin and penicillin. There are instances where patients may need to take more than one antibiotic at a time, and it is important to be aware of this interaction when selecting therapies.

The following list is not intended to be a complete list of drug interactions. It is best to consult your provider or pharmacist for a complete list.

Lingering Sinus Infection Or Chronic Runny Nose

A lingering sinus infection is different from a chronic runny nose. Chronic runny nose typically comes from allergies or other irritants in the air. However, this can turn into an infection over time.

When the sinuses become infected, the allergies, irritants, or viral cold have caused swelling in the nose thats blocked the drainage pathways. Consequently, fluid and mucous accumulate in the sinuses, where it has become infected with bacteria.

If youve been sick more than 10 days and begin to experience other symptoms like facial pressure, headache, and fever, youre dealing with more than a chronic runny nose.

Sinusitis is one of the more common conditions that can afflict people throughout their lives. About 30 million adults have sinusitis. Colds differ from sinusitis and are only caused by viruses and last about seven to 10 days while sinusitis may have many different causes , and usually last longer with more pronounced and variable symptoms.

Is Minocycline Or Doxycycline More Effective

The effectiveness of minocycline or doxycycline is relative to the indication being compared. One of the most common mutual indications for these two drugs is acne rosacea. A randomized controlled trial, published in 2017, sought to compare the efficacy and safety of these two drugs in the treatment of rosacea. Eighty patients with mild to severe rosacea were randomized to either doxycycline 40 mg or minocycline 100 mg. The results of the study found that improvement scores were significantly better for the minocycline group. The minocycline group also had fewer relapses in symptoms and had a longer remission period. There was no significant difference in safety between the two drugs.

A systematic review of literature was done to also compare and evaluate the safety and adverse events between minocycline and doxycycline. The review looked at 15 years of data. Doxycycline was prescribed three times more often than minocycline. While adverse events for either drug are relatively low, doxycycline was associated with fewer adverse events than minocycline.

Why Is This Medication Prescribed

Minocycline is used to treat infections caused by bacteria including pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections certain infections of the skin, eye, lymphatic, intestinal, genital, and urinary systems and certain other infections that are spread by ticks, lice, mites, and infected animals. It is also used along with other medications to treat acne. Minocycline is also used to treat plague and tuleramia . It can also be used in patients who cannot be treated with penicillin to treat certain types of food poisoning, and anthrax . It can also be used to eliminate bacteria from your nose and throat that may cause meningitis in others, even though you may not have an infection. Minocycline extended-release tablet is only used to treat acne. Minocycline is in a class of medications called tetracycline antibiotics. It works to treat infections by preventing the growth and spread of bacteria. It works to treat acne by killing the bacteria that infects pores and decreasing a certain natural oily substance that causes acne.

Antibiotics such as minocycline will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.

People With Sinus Infections Stay On Antibiotics Too Long

    By Lisa Rapaport, Reuters Health

    5 Min Read

    – Most people prescribed antibiotics for sinus infections are on treatment courses of 10 days or longer even though infectious disease doctors recommend five to seven days for uncomplicated cases, a U.S. study suggests.

Researchers examined data from a sample representing an estimated 3.7 million adults treated for sinusitis and prescribed antibiotics in 2016. Overall, 70 percent of antibiotics prescribed were for 10 days or longer, the study found.

Any time antibiotics are used, they can cause side effects and lead to antibiotic resistance, said senior study author Dr. Katherine Fleming-Dutra, deputy director of the Office of Antibiotic Stewardship at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

This is why it is so important to only use antibiotics when they are needed and to use the right antibiotic for the minimum effective duration, Fleming-Dutra said by email.

Common side effects of antibiotics can include rash, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea and yeast infections, she said. More serious side effects may include life-threatening allergic reactions and Clostridium difficile infection, which causes diarrhea that can lead to severe colon damage and death.

Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them and can make infections harder to treat.
