What Is Sinus Infection

Sinus Fighting blend [Young Living Essential Oils]

Sinus infection, otherwise called sinusitis, is a condition whereby the cavities located around the nasal airways become inflamed and stuffed.

While acute sinusitis may come from allergies or a cold and may naturally go without any medical intervention, chronic cases are caused by abnormal growth or an infection and may stay for up to eight weeks.

Indeed, several over-the-counter prescriptions deliver fast relief to sinus blockage. But,too often, these recommendations leave some undesirable effects.

As a result, researchers are investigating more natural options to manage sinusitis. Among the popular options found so far, essential oils look most promising.

Lets quickly run through some essential oils to consider for an alternative nasal decongestant.

Essential Oil Safety Precautions

Essential oils are made up of the aromatic volatile oils of plants and are quite potent, so safety is key when working with these valuable plant compounds. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Do Not Ingest: Some companies consider it safe to ingest essential oils internally, but we and many other natural health practitioners strongly disagree.
  • Dilute: Essential oils should be diluted in a carrier oil before topical use.
  • Avoid the Eyes: Essential oils can irritate eye tissue and can be difficult to flush out, so avoid splashing or rubbing your eyes when working with them.
  • Use Caution if Pregnant: Many essential oils are contraindicated during pregnancy, so check in with your healthcare provider before use.
  • Choose Quality: Do your research to ensure you are purchasing only high-quality, pure, and therapeutic grade essential oils. Many products marketed as essential oils have been found to be diluted, contain synthetic chemicals fragrance oils, or made from plant material too degraded to be effective. Three trustworthy essential oil brands we rely on are Pranarom, Floracopeia, and Flor de Amor.
  • Less Is More: Essential oils are precious! It takes a large amount of plant material to make a very small amount of oil, so be sustainable and use sparingly!
  • Frankincense Essential Oil To Treat Inflammation

The therapeutic benefits of frankincense essential oil include natural anti-inflammatory and pain-relief properties. Frankincense is often used in topical formulations and regarded as one of the best essential oils to reduce swelling, promote healing and may even improve skin tenderness. A recent clinical study suggests that frankincense essential oil possesses promising abilities to influence the cellular processes of inflammation and tissue regrowth.3

A 2016 study concluded that frankincense essential oil may be useful in treating patients with inflammatory conditions. Chemical constitutes found in frankincense essential oil were shown to inhibit the release of leukotrienes in isolated cells. These constitutes may help provide relief from various inflammatory conditions such as ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, bronchitis, and sinusitis.4

Vapour Phase Test For Demonstrating The Antimicrobial Activity Of Essential Oils By Gaseous Contact

Use Young Living oils to help ease sinus crud the natural way! For more ...

The antimicrobial activity of EOs in vitro has been extensively investigated and demonstrated against a number of microorganisms, generally using disc diffusion or agar dilution methods as a directcontact assay.24, 25, 26, 27, 28 These methods used different parameters usually without any innovations, therefore the results from the assays are difficult to compare with each other and sometimes their reliability is questionable. It should not be forgotten that EOs are nonwater soluble substances, thus the common screening methods may be not appropriate for their antimicrobial testing.

In 1959, the vapour activity of EOs was published first by Maruzzella et al.31 and Kienholz.32 Today the inverted Petridish technique is used by several researchers.33, 34 In some cases an airtight box of 1 L air capacity was applied to increase the vapour concentration of EO.35 A review published by Al Yousef in 201436 gives an overview of test methods used for determination of the antimicrobial activity of EOs or their components by gaseous contact method. Moreover, factors affecting the efficacy of vapour activity of EOs were also discussed. Based on this review, EOs can be used as air disinfectants in healthcare environments to control RTIs due to their antibacterial activity observed at optimized VP conditions.
