Should You Test For Yeast Infection At Home

Remotoscope: Checking for Ear Infections From Home

You may want to test for a yeast infection if youre experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Itching in your genital area

Additionally, if you have any of these symptoms and fall into any one of the following categories, you may be at a greater risk of yeast infection:

  • On a round of antibiotics or just finished one
  • Have diabetes or a compromised immune system

When Should I See A Doctor

You should visit your doctor if:

  • you or your child is in pain
  • there is discharge from your or your childs ear
  • you or your child is unwell or vomiting or has a fever
  • you or your child cant hear properly
  • your child gets repeated ear infections

Go to your nearest emergency department if there is redness, pain or swelling of the bone behind the ear or if the ear is pushed forward. This could be a sign of a serious infection called mastoiditis.

  • Gently pull and push your ear to work the drops in.
  • Stay lying down for 5 minutes so the drops do not come out.

Sleep Without Putting Pressure On The Ear

Some sleep positions will aggravate pain from ear infections, while some can help relieve it. Sleep with the affected ear raised instead of having it faced down toward the pillow. This can help the ear drain better if necessary.

You can also sleep with your head elevated by using extra pillows. This can also help the ears drain faster.

    Who Should Make An Otoscopy

    Treating ear infections

The most common causes of otoscopy are ear pain and impaired hearing. Ear aches are usually due to middle ear infection, but may also be due to inflammation of the ear canal.

Children get much more frequent middle ear infection than adults, while ear infections affect both adults and children. In children, fluid in the middle ear is a common cause of hearing impairment.

Ear cushions are another common cause of hearing loss in both children and adults.

    Antibiotics And Other Prescriptions

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , using antibiotics by mouth to treat ear infections may not help certain cases of middle ear infections. Antibiotics are not effective against outer ear and viral infections.

The main treatments for outer ear infections are manual cleanings and ear drops. The type of ear drop will depend on what is causing the infection. In the case of malignant otitis externa, intravenous antibiotics are the primary treatment.

How Are Outer Ear Infections Treated

Dr. Wang: Most ENT doctors and primary care physicians will prescribe antibiotic ear drops only. Typically, oral antibiotics are not necessary, and we like to avoid overprescribing them so they continue to work when we actually need them. Occasionally, the opening of the ear may be too inflamed or sticky to get the drops in, so we have to stick a little wick in there to get the drops where they need to go. The provider may prescribe oral antibiotics if the outer ear infection is really severe.

Ear infections in babies and toddlers are extremely common. In fact, according to the National Institutes of Health, five out of six children will experience an ear infection before their third birthday.

“Many parents are concerned that an ear infection will affect their child’s hearing irreversiblyor that an ear infection will go undetected and untreated,” says David Tunkel, M.D., Johns Hopkins Medicine pediatric otolaryngologist . “The good news is that most ear infections go away on their own, and those that don’t are typically easy to treat.”

What Do The Test Results Mean

Normally, your ear canal is skin-colored and your eardrum is light gray or pearly white. The light should reflect off of a healthy eardrum. You may also have some yellow or brown earwax, which isnt harmful. If your ear canal and eardrum appear healthy, you mostly likely dont have an ear infection.

If your doctor identifies any of the following in your ear canal or behind your eardrum, you most likely have an ear infection:

If the light doesnt reflect off of your eardrum, its another indication that fluid may have collected behind the eardrum due to an infection.

Longer Term Effects Of Inner Ear Infections

Generally, the symptoms will clear up as soon as the infection is gone. However, the effects can sometimes last longer.

You might still feel dizzy and off-balance even when the other symptoms caused by the infection have gone. This can be a sign that the balance organs were damaged. Your brain can usually learn to work with these changes, so your sense of balance should usually come back by itself. However, if youre struggling to cope or the problem persists, you should see an ENT specialist. The doctor can check for any underlying causes and may refer you for vestibular rehabilitation therapy to help you to recover your balance.

Inner ear infections can also have a longer term effect on your hearing. This is more likely if you had bacterial infection, so your doctor might recommend a hearing test to check on your ears after the infection.

    Ear Infection Signs And Symptoms

The telltale sign of an ear infection is pain in and around the ear. Young children can develop ear infections before they are old enough to talk. That means parents are often left guessing why their child appears to be suffering. When your child can’t say “my ear hurts,” the following signs suggest an ear infection could be the culprit:

    • Tugging or pulling the ear
    • Crying and irritability
    • Fever, especially in younger children
    • Fluid draining from the ear
    • Loss of balance
    • Difficulty hearing or responding to auditory cues

Signs that require immediate attention include high fever, severe pain, or bloody or pus-like discharge from the ears.

What Do The Test Results Imply

Usually, the ear canal has a color similar to your skin while the eardrum has a pearly white or light gray color. The light must reflect back of a healthy eardrum. Also, you may see some brown or yellow earwax that is not harmful. If your childs eardrum and ear canal appear healthy, most likely he is free from an ear infection.

However, if one or more of the below-mentioned symptoms are witnessed during an examination, then most probably he has an ear infection:

Besides these symptoms, another indicator of having an ear infection is when the light does not reflect off your childs eardrum. It is mainly because of the presence of fluid in the ear that gets accumulated over time.

How Do Cotton Swabs Cause Outer Ear Infections

Dr. Wang: Earwax is a natural way for your body to trap and slow the growth of bacteria that may have entered your ear. When you apply cotton swabs, you often wind up pushing earwax further into the ear canal. This impacted wax can then trap water or moisture deep in the canal, setting you up for an infection.

Now Your Smartphone Can Be Used To Diagnose Ear Infections At Home

Using your smartphone to check for ear infections could reduce trips to the pediatricianâs office.

Cameras in smartphones will inevitably replace nearly all portable cameras and camcorders, but could they also make basic medical instruments obsolete? A startup called CellScope plans to do just that by turning smartphones into digital first aid kits. To kickoff its campaign, the company is developing an iPhone attachment that turns the smartphone into an otoscope, providing a magnified view of the middle ear.

Why does the company want to make it easy for doctorâs and parents to peer inside their kidsâ heads? Because ear infections are the number 1 reason children are taken to see pediatricians and often why they end up in the emergency room. According to the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, 93 percent of children before the age of 7 will have an ear infection and 6-8 percent will suffer with frequent infections, defined as 3 or more in a 12-month period. In the US alone, 30 million pediatrician visits each year are attributed to ear infections at a cost in the billions of dollars.

Sample images from CellScopeâs otoscope illustrate the diverse conditions within the middle ear.

Because children who suffer from frequent ear infections may get fluid buildup that can lead to hearing loss, pediatricians frequently recommend implantation of tympanostomy tubes. But this requires major surgery to get them in and out, if they donât fall out on their own.

When Your Doctor May Prescribe Antibiotics

Home Remedy For Earwax & Ear Infections

While every situation is unique, there are several factors that doctors consider when recommending antibiotics:

    • What they see If the infection is in the outer ear, it may be clear its caused by bacteria. In this case your doctor may recommend antibiotic eardrops to help clean out the ear infection. If your doctor cant see the ear infection because its on the inside of the ear, they may not prescribe antibiotics right away.
    • How long its been Viral infections typically go away on their own in 1-2 weeks. If the ear infection has been around for less than a week, your doctor may recommend waiting to see if the ear infection goes away on its own, a sign that its viral. If its been more than a week, your doctor may recommend starting antibiotics.
    • Your childs age The doctor may be more likely to prescribe antibiotics for children under 2 years old, especially if they have infections in both ears, have pain thats moderate to severe, or have a fever.
    • Symptoms If you or your child have certain symptoms, such as an extremely high fever or severe dehydration, your doctor may recommend starting antibiotics sooner.
    • Medical conditions Your doctor may recommend starting antibiotics right away if there are certain medical conditions, such as cleft palate or repeat infections, that could lead to problems with an ear infection. In most cases, antibiotics will also be recommended when someone with a cochlear implant gets an ear infection.

    When To See Your Doctor

Dr. Nguyen-Huynh recommends seeing your doctor if:

    • Your symptoms remain after two or three days, even if youve tried over-the-counter or home remedies.
    • Your ear is very painful, or you have other symptoms that bother you.
    • You have a fever over 104 degrees Fahrenheit

Other common conditions like temporomandibular joint dysfunction , can masquerade as earache infections. TMJ causes ear pain because your ear canal and jaw joint share a nerve.

If you have ear pain along with trouble chewing, talking or yawning, then you should see a dentist or TMJ expert to be sure youre treating the right condition, advises Dr. Nguyen-Huynh.

The good news? Hot and cold compresses and OTC pain relievers can also help relieve TMJ pain until you sort things out.

Types Of Sinus Infections: Chronic Vs Acute

There are four types of sinus infections. These classifications depend on the length and frequency of the infection:

    • Acute sinusitis. This type of sinus infection lasts only for a short time, defined by the American Academy of Otolaryngology as less than 4 weeks. This short-term infection is usually part of a cold or other respiratory illness. It may also be caused by a bacterial infection .
    • Subacute sinusitis. A subacute sinus infection lasts between 4 and 12 weeks .
    • Recurrent acute sinusitis. An acute sinus infection is considered recurrent if the infection returns four or more times within a year, with each infection lasting 7 days or more.
    • Chronic sinusitis.Chronic sinus infections last for more than 12 weeks or continue to recur.

Many sinus infection symptoms are common in both acute and chronic forms. Seeing a doctor is the best way to learn if you have an infection, find the cause, and get treatment.

For cases of acute bacterial sinus infections, these symptoms last at least 10 days without improving, or they worsen within 10 days after seeming to improve. In this case, its important to talk with a doctor, such as a general practitioner or an ear, nose, and throat doctor , to get a diagnosis and treatment plan.

How did you find the parents responded to the app?

We approached parents just before their kids were about to have surgery to have ear tubes put in. We did a couple minutes of training, and found that the parents had close to identical accuracy to the physicians who had been testing them. We had 25 parents do the test, and 24 of the cases, the parents had the same result as the physicians who used the app.

How do you imagine this app will integrate with the current health care landscape?

One way our app could be used is with telemedicine. You could share the results with the doctor and book an appointment with the specialist if the doctor thinks you need to see one. It could reduce the amount of waiting time and even reduce costs. These features are not yet available, but were working towards them.

Is it already available in app stores? And what does the future look like?

Its not currently available in app stores, but were hoping to have it in there in a years time. Were also hoping to get FDA approval by the end of year. We created a company Edus Health and are partnering with physicians in developing countries. One need is for parents, but doctors in developing countries may not have access to specialist equipment.
