  • Surgery may be needed if a ureter is blocked. The ureter is the tube that takes urine from a kidney to the bladder. A blocked ureter can cause repeated kidney infections.

To Work Out Or Not To Work Out

While Dr Lee says that its fine to work out with a UTI if you feel up to it, she caveats that with the fact that sweating a lot can lead to dehydration, and this can make a UTI worse. Its also probably worth understanding what caused your infection in the first place. For example, if youre regularly doing long runs that last over two hours in the lead up to a marathon and youre not taking on fluids during or after, your UTI might be linked to continuous dehydration and stress.

The biggest benefits were seen by those who did low-to-medium levels of exercise such as walking or cycling.

They also point out that one of the best reasons to engage in aerobic exercise is for the release of endorphins, which are the feel-good chemicals that act as your body’s natural painkillers.

Once you resume your routine, one issue to be aware of, says Kouri is how being dehydrated can make a kidney infection worse. That’s why it is so important to keep your body hydrated before, during and after exercise.

Plus, by staying hydrated, Kouri says you will urinate more, which helps flush out bacteria in the urinary tract. “You are often slightly dehydrated when experiencing a kidney infection, so you should be drinking more water than usual while exercising,” says Kouri.
