There may be an interaction between azithromycin and any of the following:

• tricyclic antidepressants
• typhoid vaccine

They will be able to examine you and determine the best medication for you.

They may take a small sample of vaginal discharge to test under a microscope to form their diagnosis.

Before You Start To Take It

Tell your doctor if you have allergies to any other medicines, foods, preservatives or dyes.

Tell your doctor if you have or have had any of the following medical conditions:

• liver or kidney problems
• heart problems, including heart rhythm abnormalities
• electrolyte disturbance, particularly low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood
• myasthenia gravis

Tell your doctor if you have pneumonia and any of the following risk factors:

To help determine the cause of vaginal infection or irritation, the doctor usually asks the woman about her symptoms and performs a physical and pelvic examination. The doctor usually also tests the woman’s urine and samples of vaginal discharge. Before the exam, sexual intercourse and douching should be avoided for one to two days if possible to avoid complicating the diagnosis.

The doctor may also ask the following questions:

• When did this condition begin? Has the discharge changed during the condition?
• What does the discharge look like? What is the color and consistency? Does it have an odor?
• Do you have pain, itching, or burning?

Q:I have a 61-year-old female patient with stubborn blepharitis and an early stye. I was about to prescribe oral doxycycline, but when I asked if she was allergic to antibiotics, she told me she gets yeast infections. How should I handle this? A:

But, despite how the patient answered the question, understand that a yeast infection is not an allergic reaction to doxycycline, Dr. Autry says, but rather a common adverse reaction to the drug.

What do you do for a patient with blepharitis who gets yeast infectionswhen prescribed antibiotics? Low-dose doxycycline is likely the answer.

When we first started using doxycycline for eyelid problems, we were using the dosage recommended for a typical bacterial infection, which is 100mg twice a day, Dr. Autry says. But for blepharitis, we use the drug as much for its anti-inflammatory properties as for its antibiotic properties. So, in the last few years, weve been dropping the dosage to 50mg when possible, which in many cases is enough to handle the blepharitis. But its not enough to really affect the normal bacterial flora, so it wont likely cause a yeast infection.

Of course, allergic and adverse reactions do occur from other commonly used oral antibiotics, such as the penicillins and sulfa drugs. For example, if the patient is truly allergic to penicillins, such as dicloxacillin or amoxicillin, try a sulfa drug such as sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, available as Septra or Bactrim .

Azithromycin is usually taken once a day, unless youre having it by injection. Try to take your medicine at the same time each day.

The usual dose is 500mg a day for 3 to 10 days depending on the infection being treated.

For some infections, youll be given a one-off higher dose of 1g or 2g.

The dose may be lower for children or if you have liver or kidney problems.

Azithromycin is sometimes prescribed long term to prevent chest infections if you keep getting them. In this case, its usually taken 3 times a week, often on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Medication For Treating Yeast Infections

Standard medicines for yeast infections are all a part of the class of antifungal drugs called azoles. They include:

Treatments last one, three, or seven days, all of which are equally effective. Unless you have an allergic reaction to the medication, side effects are generally mild.

You should not use tampons while using the suppositories and creams. You should also avoid condoms and diaphragms because the medicines contain oil, which can degrade the contraceptives.

Having sex while being treated for a yeast infection is not generally recommended because it may worsen symptoms and cause micro-tears in your skin that increase your risk of catching a sexually transmitted disease.

Diflucan is a prescription pill for yeast infections. Most women only require a single dose of the medication to clear their yeast infection, but fluconazole is not recommended for pregnant women due to a potential risk of harming the developing baby.

Fluconazole may cause mild and infrequent side effects, such as headache, rash, and upset stomach. More rarely, severe side effects may develop, such as flu-like symptoms, swelling, and seizures.

Who Develops Oral Thrush

Small numbers of Candida commonly live on healthy skin and in a healthy mouth. They are usually harmless. Healthy people do not normally develop oral thrush. However, certain situations or conditions may cause an overgrowth of Candida which can lead to oral thrush. These include:

• Being a baby. Oral thrush is quite common in young babies.
• Wearing dentures, especially if they are not taken out at night, not kept clean, or do not fit well and rub on the gums.
• A course of antibiotic medicine. Antibiotics will kill harmless germs which live in the mouth. They do not kill Candida which may multiply more easily if there are fewer bacteria around.
• Excessive use of antibacterial mouthwash .
• Taking steroid tablets or inhalers.
• Having a dry mouth due to a lack of saliva. This may occur as a side-effect from certain medicines . It may also occur following radiotherapy to the head or neck, or as a symptom of Sjögren’s syndrome.
• Having diabetes.
• Having a poor immune system. For example, if you are taking medicines that suppress your immune system, if you have certain cancers, or if you have HIV/AIDS.
• Being frail or in generally poor health.
• Smoking. Smokers are more likely to develop oral thrush.

Oral thrush is not usually contagious. You cannot usually pass on oral thrush to other people.

How Is Uti Treated

For UTI treatment, your doctor will typically do a urine culture, to determine the type of infection. If the infection is caused by bacteria, the doctor may recommend antibioticsoral antibiotics for lower tract infection, and intravenous antibiotics for upper tract infection. If the infection is caused by a virus, then the doctor will recommend antiviral medication.

What Other Drugs Will Affect Azithromycin

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture . Do not freeze.

Unneeded medications should be disposed of in special ways to ensure that pets, children, and other people cannot consume them. However, you should not flush this medication down the toilet. Instead, the best way to dispose of your medication is through a medicine take-back program. Talk to your pharmacist or contact your local garbage/recycling department to learn about take-back programs in your community.
