Can I Still Breastfeed If Im Sick

You can still breastfeed your baby if you have a cold. Your body makes antibodies that youll pass on to your baby through your milk. You wont spread the cold virus through your breastmilk, but your baby might catch it from droplets when you talk, sneeze, or cough.

Wash your hands before and after you touch your baby. If you feel very unwell, you could pump some breastmilk and ask a caregiver to feed it to your baby with a bottle. The caregiver should also wash their hands before and after they touch the baby.

Baby On Board: Tips For Managing Pregnancy Rhinitis

When you think of side effects or symptoms brought on by pregnancy, nasal congestion and runny nose are not typically among the first to come to mind.

But maybe they should. Having a stuffy nose, difficulty breathing or sleeping, and snoring when pregnant can be alarming, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the start of flu season.

Pregnancy rhinitis, also called gestational rhinitis, is a common ailment in the second and third trimesters, affecting approximately 20% of women. Characterized by inflammation and swelling of the mucous membranes in the nose, pregnancy rhinitis symptoms include congestion , sneezing, postnasal drip, and runny nose. These symptoms can also lead to poor sleep when your growing belly might already be making it difficult to rest.

All these issues can dramatically affect your mood and quality of life. The good news is that, for most patients, pregnancy rhinitis is temporary and there are safe, effective treatments available.

I’ve invited my colleague, Ashleigh Halderman, M.D., an ear, nose, and throat specialist at UT Southwestern to explain in more detail the causes of pregnancy rhinitis and how patients can manage their symptoms.

Can You Safely Take Antibiotics While Breastfeeding

In most cases, antibiotics are safe for breastfeeding parents and their babies.

Antibiotics are one of the most common medications mothers are prescribed, and all pass in some degree into milk, explains the Academy of American Pediatrics . At the same time, the AAP adds: In general, if the antibiotic would be administered directly to a premature infant or a neonate, then it is safe for the mother to take during breastfeeding.

So what does this mean for you and your breastfeeding baby?

First, its important to keep in mind how medications generally work when youre breastfeeding.

As the Mayo Clinic explains, the majority of drugs that become present in your bloodstream will also be present in your breast milk. However, the amount in your milk is usually lower than the amount in your blood, and most medications pose no real risk to most infants.

However, the Mayo Clinic also notes that there are exceptions, and as such, every medication you take including antibiotics should be cleared with your babys pediatrician.

In addition to the medication itself, there are other factors to keep in mind, including how old your baby is. Exposure to antibiotics will pose a greater risk to premature babies and newborns, as opposed to older babies and toddlers, explains the Mayo Clinic.

And again, if your baby could safely take the antibiotic, its likely safe to take it while breastfeeding.

Home Remedies: How To Alleviate A Congestion Naturally

There are many safe home remedies you can use to alleviate your symptoms and recover from a sinus infection:

    • Drink plenty of fluids such as water, broth, and citrus juice. Staying hydrated is important for helping you fight infection and for clearing a stuffy nose.
    • Use saline nasal irrigation or saline nose drops. You can make your own saline drops by combining 1 cup of warm water with 1/8 tsp salt and a tiny pinch of baking soda.
    • Use a humidifier at night. This will help clear nasal passages. You may also lean over a pan of boiling water taken off the stove, place a towel over your head, and breathe in the steam. This helps open your nasal passages and loosens mucus in your chest.
    • Elevating your head with a couple of pillows while lying down may make breathing easier. Using nasal strips also helps open nasal passages.
    • For a sore throat, gargle salt water , drink a warm liquid or suck on ice. Honey and lemon may also soothe a sore throat.
    • Make sure you are getting plenty of sleep as this will help your immune system fight the infection.
    • During pregnancy, it is common to lose your appetite, and feeling sick may not help. However, even if you dont have an appetite, it is important to eat well. If you lose your appetite, it may help to eat smaller meals throughout the day. Make sure you are eating nutrient-dense foods such as fruits and vegetables. Soup may also be a soothing option.

    How To Minimise The Risk

    • Sometimes it is best to express and discard your milk while you are taking medicine. This will keep up the milk supply.
    • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about switching to a different medicine.
    • Take the medicine a different way, for example as a nasal spray.
    • Take the lowest possible dose to relieve your symptoms.
    • Take the medicine straight after a feed, or before your baby is due to have a long sleep.

    What Is Sinus Infection

Breastfeeding While You Are Having Cold or Fever – Is It Safe?

A sinus infection is usually characterized by a liquid nose, sneezing, coughs, inflamed nasal cavities, headaches, and a raw throat. One of the factors of a sinus infection that affects a breastfeeding mother is due to the microorganism infection which is especially due to a build-up of fluid and mucous secretion inside the cavity that permits the dangerous microorganism to breed. This can be treated with a course of oral medication which has antibiotics and antihistamines.

    Cold Medications Precautions While Breast

If you take lozenges or purchase a sore throat gargle, make sure you read the ingredients on the back or side label. You should avoid medications containing povidone-iodine. This ingredient increases iodine levels in breast milk. Higher levels raise the risk of transient hypothyroidism in breast-fed babies.

You should also avoid cold medications with high alcohol content. These include some nighttime relief medications that cause drowsiness. Medications with multiple ingredients for multisymptom relief are convenient, but its safer to take single ingredient cold medications. This precaution limits your babys exposure to over-the-counter medications.

You can also limit your babys exposure by taking dosages around your babys breast-feeding schedule, if possible. For example, can you feed your baby before a dose, and then avoid breast-feeding for one or two hours immediately after each dose?

Another way to reduce your babys exposure is by avoiding extra strength cold medications like those that only require one or two dosages a day. These medications are convenient because you dont have to take a pill every four hours, but they also remain in your bloodstream and milk supply longer than other types of medication.

Zincnutritional supplement . Zinc can be used topically or ingested, and is usually not harmful when breastfeeding an older infant. However, doses of zinc in cold remedies can be in excess of what is safe. There is no accepted standard for what is too much, but the recommended daily allowance of zinc from all sources is 12 mg per day in a lactating woman. Doses of commonly marketed zinc supplements frequently range from 8-25 mg taken every 3-4 hours. Total daily zinc consumption can become easily excessive with these products. Zinc salts for cold treatment can have possible negative effects on breastfeeding infants during the first weeks of life. Thus, excessive zinc supplementation in breastfeeding mothers should be avoided for the first month postpartum. Topical application of zinc oxide is not absorbed, and is safe when breastfeeding. Common trade names: Galzin, Airborne, Orazinc, Zicam

Vitamin Cnutritional supplement . Vitamin C is often advertised for cold-fighting. Although its efficacy in treating colds has not been supported, it likely is not harmful to supplement while breastfeeding. Even high levels of maternal consumption resulted in only slightly increased levels in breastmilk.5 Common trade names: Airborne, Emergen-C, Cenolate, Celin, Cemill

    Can Medicines Affect The Baby

Some medicines can give the baby diarrhoea or vomiting, or make them unusually sleepy or irritable. Other medicines can also cause you to have more or less milk production than normal.

The amount of medicine that enters the breast milk and the effect on the baby depend on the age and health of the baby, the type of medicine, how much you take, and when you take it.

You should take special care if your baby was premature, is sick, or is taking medicines themselves.

    What Causes Sinusitis

Paranasal sinuses make mucous that drains out through your nose. Sometimes the lining of the sinuses become inflamed or infected. This usually happens after youve had an infection of your upper airways such as a cold, or when youve had hay fever or another allergy. Some people get sinusitis after every cold, while others get it rarely. Viral sinusitis is the most common cause for sinusitis. Bacterial or fungal infection is a much less common cause. Only 0.5% to 2% of cases are estimated to be complicated by a bacterial rhinosinusitis .

Other things that can increase your risk of getting sinusitis include:

    • deviated nasal septum
    • changes in air pressure such as during an airplane flight or scuba diving
    • conditions that weaken your immune system such as chemotherapy treatment
    • ciliary dysmotility such as with cystic fibrosis or Kartageners syndrome.

    Do I Need Antibiotics

Antibiotics are seldom needed to treat sinusitis because sinusitis is mostly caused by viruses . Antibiotics only work against bacteria but not viruses. Using antibiotics when they are not needed can lead to antibiotic resistance. This is when overuse of antibiotics encourages the growth of bacteria that cant be controlled easily with drugs. That makes you more at risk of antibiotic-resistant infections in the future and makes antibiotics less effective for everyone.

    • Antibiotics are considered when symptoms last longer than 10 days, start to improve but then worsen again, or are very severe such as a fever over 39°C, extreme pain and tenderness over your sinuses, or signs of a skin infection, such as a hot, red rash that spreads quickly.
    • If you are given antibiotics, finish the full course.
