Monistat is a popular brand of OTC yeast infection products, which comes in different strengths and forms. These include:

  • Cream, which is applied with an applicator

Which form of yeast infection medicine you choose should be based on what you find more comfortable to use, as suppositories and creams were found to work similarly well in one study.

These topical yeast infection medicines are available in 1-day, 3-day, and 7-day regimens. If your symptoms are milder, 1- or 3-day versions should be enough to treat it. But if your symptoms are more severe, you may require the 7-day course. Its best to check with your healthcare provider if you arent sure how long you should use topical OTC yeast infection medicines.

Warnings For Other Groups

Pregnant women: Research in humans has shown adverse effects to the fetus when the mother takes this drug in doses of 150 mg or higher. In lower doses, research in animals has shown adverse effects. There havent been enough studies done to be certain how lower doses of the drug might affect the human fetus.

This drug should only be used during pregnancy in serious cases where its needed to treat a dangerous infection in the mother. And it should only be used if the potential risk to the fetus is acceptable given the drugs potential benefit.

Talk with your doctor if youre pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Ask your doctor to tell you about the specific harm that may be done to the fetus.

If you become pregnant while taking this drug, call your doctor right away.

Women who are breastfeeding: Fluconazole passes into breast milk and may cause side effects in a child who is breastfed. Talk with your doctor if you breastfeed your child. You may need to decide whether to stop breastfeeding or stop taking this drug.

For seniors: The kidneys of older adults may not work as well as they used to. This can cause your body to process drugs more slowly. As a result, more of a drug stays in your body for a longer time. This raises your risk of side effects.

For children: This medication shouldnt be used in people younger than 6 months.

When Youll Feel Relief

When youre coping with a yeast infection, you likely want relief as soon as possible. Different treatments may have different timelines to take full effect. Antifungal medications are the quickest and most powerful form of intervention. A single dose of Diflucan can clear up some yeast infections, and some patients may feel their symptoms resolve within a day after having taken the pill.Over-the-counter ointments or suppositories do not require a doctors visit and are widely available at pharmacies. However, these creams may take several days before fully healing your infection.

Ensure that you are applying the treatment as directed, even if you start to feel better. If you stop using an antifungal product too soon, your yeast infection may return. If your symptoms do not resolve after a week of using the over-the-counter treatment, consult your doctor.

When Should I See A Doctor

What Happens When You Mix Fluconazole And Alcohol

It is safe to eat and drink normally while taking fluconazole. There are no known interactions between alcohol and fluconazole. However, since both fluconazole and alcohol can have negative effects on the liver, it is advisable for patients with liver impairment to avoid alcohol, especially while taking fluconazole. Another important consideration is that excessive alcohol use can weaken the immune system and worsen candida infections, potentially working against the effects of fluconazole.

How Can You Prevent Vaginal Candidiasis

Eating natural, unsweetened yogurt that contains Lactobacillus acidophilus may help prevent yeast infections occurring.

The risk of yeast infections may also be lessened by staying hydrated and urinating when the need arises, not holding it in.

Women should wipe from front to back after a bowel movement, urinate before and after sex, and avoiding using douches, vaginal sprays, and scented feminine hygiene products.

They should also avoid wearing restrictive, synthetic clothing, or change out of such clothing as soon as possible after exercising or swimming.

What You Need To Do

To cure your yeast infection you must stop the Candida from mutating. This is the only way to do it. If the Candida carries on mutating in your body then youll suffer from recurrent yeast infections for a very long time until you start treating your infections from the root cause.

You also need to strengthen your bodys natural defenses so it can protect itself against infection. When you keep taking drugs your body becomes reliant on them, and it gives up fighting infections because it learns that your going to take something soon.

Yeast Infection Medication Tips

People should be aware of the following advice when taking medication for yeast infections:

  • It is important to take the entire dosage of medication. For example, if a person is using a 7-day suppository to clear an infection, they should insert the suppository daily, even if their symptoms begin to clear before the 7-day period ends.
  • The oils in certain suppositories and creams can interfere with barrier birth control methods such as condoms. The oils can weaken the materials in condoms, making them less effective. When using these yeast infection treatments, a person should use a different form of birth control or abstain from sex during the duration of the treatment if they would typically use a condom.
  • People who are pregnant will need to consult a doctor. Pregnant people should always consult a doctor before using any prescription or nonprescription medication to treat an infection.

Treating Yeast Infections And Drug Interactions

Diflucan One 150mg Capsule 1

Medication interactions can be a serious issue, and its important to educate yourself about certain kinds of drug interactions. Did you know that for women who take medications on a regular basislike oral contraceptives or medicines for treating diabetes or high cholesterolwhen treating a yeast infection, theres more to think about than just eliminating symptoms? For these women, MONISTAT® may be a safer choice. This is because topical antifungals cause fewer drug interactions within the body because they work at the site of the infection, not in the bloodstream.

Studies have shown that oral antifungals such as fluconazole have been associated with abnormal elevations of liver enzymes. Because the body metabolizes fluconazole in the liver, interactions can occur if you take fluconazole along with other medications that are also metabolized in the liver.¹ Even if you take just one tablet, fluconazole remains in your body for days. Before you take fluconazole to treat a yeast infection, check with your healthcare professional or pharmacist about potential interactions with medicines you may already be taking, or check for medication interactions online. This is especially important if you experience recurrent vaginal yeast infections, since your healthcare professional may be likely to prescribe multiple doses of fluconazole.¹
