However, my period ended up lasting for another two weeks. It wasnt super heavy so it didnt require the use of pads and tampons. I was using panty liners for the time being so my underwear didnt get ruined. After a time, I started to develop a really painful itch, and once the bleeding stopped, an odd discharge. I realized it was a yeast infection which wasnt new to me but I had never before had one so severe that I couldnt even sit comfortably.

I also got the same itching from pads, sometimes to the point where I was itching so severely that I ripped a hole in the pad. Thinking it was the pads themselves, I emailed the company, asked them if they changed the ingredients, and explained my symptoms to them. They emailed me back ensuring me they have not changed the pads since Ive been using them , but they would send me a refund of $10 anyway. They did and I thanked them for being so kind about this and told them I would speak to a gynecologist.

I didnt get any severe itching from tampons but did find I had trouble inserting them sometimes. Also, because my period isnt typically especially heavy, it can be painful to take them out. I also had a pair of Thinx that are great and super-comfortable, but having only one pair doesnt do much good when Im bleeding for three weeks straight.

Until it didnt

Note: I would recommend seeing a healthcare provider before you try self treating if youve never had a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis.

What Is The Vaginal Microbiome

When you are born, you are free from any micro-organisms . As soon as you take your first breath you begin to develop your own unique microbiome.

What creates your microbiome is dependent on environmental conditions, your mothers microflora, the food you eat, and various other factors. Once you grow up, your body becomes home to trillions of microbes.

The vaginal microbiome is your vaginas unique mix of different microbes that populate it.

The stability of your vaginal microbiome depends on several factors:

  • Hormonal changes you experience with different contraceptives or during menstruation.
  • Use of any vaginal care products such as douches, vaginal washes, and soaps, etc.
  • Your sexual interactions
  • Use of medications such as antibiotics etc.

How Can Your Bv Infection Be Diagnosed

The answer is simple. If youre experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, then youll need to consult your OB/GYN or health care provider ASAP. Amsels criteria are the most accepted way to diagnose BV. It has 4 parameters:

  • Presence of thin and grayish-white discharge
  • Positive whiff test adding a drop of potassium hydroxide on discharge will give off a bad fishy odor
  • Vaginal pH > 4.5
  • Presence of clue cells

How Is An Infection Treated

Untreated PID can permanently damage your organs. Pelvic infection can lead to infertility or chronic pain.

The sooner you start treatment, the better. That usually involves taking antibiotics. Other treatments will depend on what type of infection you have.

You dont necessarily need to have your IUD removed. That said, this may be advisable if the infection doesnt show signs of improvement within a few days.

Studies show that treatment outcomes for women who keep the IUD versus women who have it removed are about the same, according to the . Those studies involved only IUDs that dont contain hormones.

Follow your doctors recommendations and continue with your follow-up care.

Iuds Can Be Expensive Upfront

An IUD, plus insertion, can cost up to $1,300 out of pocket, according to Planned Parenthood. However, the Affordable Care Act requires insurers and employers to cover IUDs and other birth control options without a copay. Be forewarned, though some insurance plans cover the device and insertion, but not the doctor’s visit to have the IUD removed, according to Bedsider.org. Check with your insurance or healthcare provider to see what an IUD costs from start to finish.

Other Ways To Prevent Recurring Utis

If you have more than 3 UTIs in 1 year, or 2 UTIs in 6 months, there are other things that may help prevent UTIs.

There is some evidence that women under 65 years old who keep getting UTIs may find it helpful to take:

  • a supplement called D-mannose this is not recommended for pregnant women
  • cranberry products, such as juice or tablets

Speak to your doctor before taking any of these during pregnancy.

Be aware that D-mannose and cranberry products can contain a lot of sugar.

How Do Iuds Work As A Birth Control Method

An intrauterine device is a long-term birth control method. It is a small, T-shaped device that only a doctor or nurse can insert into the uterus.

IUDs can be made of plastic or copper. Some contain hormones, while some do not.

Hormonal IUDs make use of the hormone progestin and releases it into your body. They remain effective for three to five years.

The copper IUD, on the other hand, does not use hormones. Instead, it prevents pregnancy by releasing copper ions through the copper wire wrapped around it.

These IUDs remain effective for up to ten years.

One benefit of using an IUD is its convenience. This birth control method does not require user compliance. Which means once its in, you can rest easy as theres nothing else you have to do.

However, this device is not completely fool-proof.

In fact, the only brand of copper IUD sold in the United States, the Paragard IUD, actually has a slew of lawsuits under its name.

In the Paragard lawsuits, a number of women implanted with the copper IUD have suffered a broad range of medical issues and dangerous side effects including organ perforation, fractures, and ectopic pregnancy, among others.

Plaintiffs claim that the grievous injuries they have suffered from resulted from copper IUDs like Paragard being defective and prone to breaking inside the body of the woman who had it inserted.

Why Might A Yeast Infection Last Longer Than Usual

When I look back and try to figure out what happened in my situation, I can think of a few factors that may have contributed: It was the beginning of winter in Ohio, and I had a habit of wearing tights + leggings every day. My house is nearly 100 years old and not great at preserving heat, so sometimes, admittedly, I would go a few days without showering.

I realize I may not have gotten rid of the infection completely after the first occurrence in Novemberlooking back I still had a little discomfort during sex, but it wasnt bad enough to worry me. The infection may have lingered and flared up when trapped in my tights.

Eventually, sitting at a desk for an 8-hour workday was excruciatingthe hot pain made me flinch and re-position every five minutes. When I went out with friends, I had to leave early so I could get home and go to sleepthe only time I wasnt in pain.

It seemed the pain increased with stress, and I was constantly stressed because of the pain. The cycle continued.

If your infection lasts longer than usual, Dr. Burke suggests several potential reasons:

  • The infection may be incompletely treated, or not treated long enough.

  • If you dont feel better after your first treatment, you may need a longer course or you may have a less common species of yeast that doesnt respond to standard medication.

  • Or, you may not have a yeast infectionit could be bacterial vaginosis or a sexually transmitted infection .

Is It Safe To Breastfeed While Using Mirena

Yeast Infection From Birth Control Pills

You may use Mirena when you are breastfeeding. Mirena is not likely to affect the quality or amount of your breast milk or the health of your nursing baby. However, isolated cases of decreased milk production have been reported. The risk of Mirena going into the wall of the uterus or going through the wall of the uterus is increased if Mirena is inserted while you are breastfeeding.

Irregular Or Heavy Periods

Your periods will change after you get the device. Hormonal IUDs +utrn/details rel=nofollow> Kyleena, Liletta, Mirena, and Skyla) often make periods lighter and shorter. Sometimes they stop menstruation altogether.

The copper IUD may make your periods heavier for the first few months.

Some women have spotting or bleeding in between periods. Your cycle may return to normal within 6 months after you get an IUD.

Can An Iud Cause Bacterial Infections

Bacterial vaginosis is a vaginal infection caused by bacteria. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , it can cause symptoms such as vaginal discharge.

Bacterial vaginosis commonly occurs in women of reproductive age.

According to the CDC, doctors do not exactly know how people get BV, although the disease may most likely spread between women who have sex with women.

Moreover, any woman can get BV, but the agency says that one of the reasons why someone might be at a higher risk is if they use an intrauterine device for birth control.

In fact, a 2012 study found that users of the IUD may be at an increased risk of bacterial vaginosis as compared to women who use combined oral contraceptives , the contraceptive patch, and the contraceptive vaginal ring.

Symptoms of BV are not easily recognizable. Some women do not even experience any symptoms at all.

Prevention Of Vaginal Yeast Infection

Women who are at high risk of a yeast infection may need to take an antifungal drug by mouth to help prevent yeast infections. Such women include those with the following:

  • A need to take antibiotics for a long time

  • Repeated yeast infections, particularly in women with a weakened immune system

Keeping the vulva clean and wearing loose, absorbent cotton clothing that allows air to circulate can reduce moisture, which encourages the growth of yeast, and thus help prevent yeast from growing.

Many women have chosen the ParaGard IUD because they believe that a copper IUD is better than hormonal birth control. However, some women have experienced severe injuries and complications from using the copper IUD. Numerous ParaGard IUD lawsuits have been filed alleging injuries ranging from infertility and uterine scarring to pelvic inflammatory disease and organ damage from device migration.

A recent study now indicates there could be another problem with copper IUDs. The study found that copper IUDs can impact microbiota over time. When the vaginal microbiome is adversely impacted, a woman can experience an increase in some infections.

Iud Insertion Isnt Pleasant

There is a pinch, followed by two big cramps, and then its done. Its very quick, says Dr. Leah Torres, an OB-GYN and reproductive health specialist in Utah. I would never tell someone, Its not bad, or, It wont hurt.

While a prophylactic over-the-counter pain reliever can help, the amount of discomfort a patient feels during insertion depends on the providers skill and the patients tolerance and expectations, Dr. Torres says. You can expect some spotting for a few days after the procedure, but it shouldnt be a period-like flow, says Dr. Yesmean Wahdan, gynecologist and associate medical director at U.S. Medical Affairs for Bayer Womens HealthCare. If you experience heavy bleeding or cramping that lasts more than a few weeks, call your doctor to see whats going on, she says.

Symptoms And Diagnosis Of Bacterial Vaginosis

  • 50% of bacterial vaginosis cases show no symptoms, but when symptoms are present, the following might happen:
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Gray or off-white vaginal discharge
  • Fishy odor from the vaginal discharge that is usually the strongest after sex
  • In very rare cases, itchiness or soreness may take place

Diagnosing bacterial vaginosis is done by taking a sample of the vaginal fluid to be observed under the microscope or sent to the laboratory for more analysis. Your doctor or healthcare professionals may also inquire about your medical history, carry out a physical examination, conduct a pelvic exam, and review the vaginas pH level.

  • Opt for a healthy diet based on veggies and fruits.
  • Avoid having multiple sex partners and unprotected sex
  • Say no to douching because it does more bad than good
  • Add probiotics to your diet. Probiotics can boost your immunity and up your good bacteria game.

Can Iud Cause Pelvic Infection

Heres the thing.

Your IUD does not directly cause the infection.

However, if there is already an infection present, then the IUD insertion process may further spread it. Two of the most common sexually transmitted diseases linked to spreading infections when the IUD is inserted are gonorrhea and chlamydia.

In fact, the Office on Womens Health says that you are at a higher risk of pelvic inflammatory disease for a few weeks after IUD insertion. Bacteria that can cause PID may get into your body during the procedure.

Pelvic inflammatory disease is an infection of your reproductive organs, such as the uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries.
