Should Bubble Baths Be Avoided In Children With Urinary Tract Infections

G ModgilA BaverstockKeywords: Copyright

Bubble baths are common products used by parents. Medical professionals, from students to consultants, can be heard across clinics throughout the country, advising parents to avoid the use of bubble bath to help prevent another urinary tract infection in their child.

In our simple survey we could not find any labels on bubble baths intended for children or babies that reinforced this advice. Are we, as general paediatricians, providing unsubstantiated advice to our patients and parents?

Can Too Many Hot Baths Be Bad For Your Intimate Health

You might need to pull the plug on your bubble baths and bath bombs if your vaginal and vulval areas are feeling irritated. Picture: Thinkstock/PA

Hot baths are notorious for causing dry and dehydrated skin, and this is no different for the fine, sensitive skin in the vaginal/vulval area, says pharmacist Gemma Fromage.

A fine balance

Bottom line, your privates dont really want to be over-cleaned, and they certainly dont want to be invaded with a load of soapy, perfumed products.

What symptoms could you experience?

Your skin might just feel a bit irritated and uncomfortably dry, or some might notice slightly worse reactions.

What should you do about it?

Lay off the baths until things are feeling back to usual. If theres any possibility of infection or the skin is sore and broken, avoiding sex is advisable too, and only clean the outside of your vulva with water. Wearing loose, breathable clothing may also help. However, always check with a pharmacist and/or your GP before using any creams, oils or medicated products on your intimate skin.

If it was simply a case of sensitive skin and a mild reaction, the symptoms should reduce or clear up in a matter of hours and would usually just be a bit of redness and irritation, says Dr Lakhani.

You could try using products specially designed for sensitive, reactive skin plus you can up the self-care factor with a drop or two of essential oil and some scented candles instead.

Can You Get It From Kissing

You can transmit Candida fungus to a partner through kissing. But that doesnt mean that theyll develop thrush as a result.

Thrush happens when risk factors, like taking antibiotics or having a suppressed immune system, throw off your bodys natural balance of Candida albicans flora. So while kissing a person with thrush might contribute to having more Candida to deal with, it wont necessarily infect you. Remember that our bodies naturally have Candida.

I have recently had several recurrent episodes of thrush. After several treatments I think I have finally managed to get rid of it.I know that certain things can trigger thrush, in particular fragranced toiletries. I don’t use alot of fragranced products, but am partial to the occasional bubble bath to help me relax after a stressful day at work .As I seem to have a tendency to thrush, and am anxious not to get it again, am I going to need to cut out the bubble baths? Are there any unfragranced bath products that I could use safely without increasing the risk of getting thrush?

The odd little thing isn’t going to be a huge issue, it’s just ‘best practice’ – e.g. as my doctor once put it, ideally women should walk round every day in skirts and no underwear, but that’s just not practical! Oh, and in terms of underwear colour, it’s just about avoiding dyes. Sanitary products:You’re limited if you rule-out cloth pads or menstrual cups . You could use sponges, softcups, diaphragms, soft tampons or organic cotton tampons and pads – although tampons are best avoided, there is a HUGE difference health-wise between commercial and organic cotton tampons. If you don’t already – take vitamin C and acidophilus tablets.

5 Ways to Prevent Yeast Infections

Some unlucky women get recurrent yeast infections, meaningthey get to deal with the symptoms four or more times a year. If thats you,the idea of sitting in an apple cider vinegar bath might not sound so wacky.

What works, and what should you avoid? Dr. Goebel shares herdos and donts for treating and preventing yeast infections.

  • DO practice good hygiene. Shower after exercise, avoid super tight clothing, dont sit around in a wet bathing suit, and dont wear a pantiliner every day since it can trap moisture, she says.
  • DO pamper your skin. If you have external irritation on the vulva, applying thick ointments like Vaseline® and Aquaphor® can provide a barrier against yeast and reduce itching.
  • MAYBE consider probiotics. Probiotics contain healthy bacteria, which might help keep yeast levels in balance. Unfortunately, Dr. Goebel says, theres no great data on whether eating foods or supplements with probiotics makes a big difference for yeast infections. But for most people, theres no harm in giving them a try. Look for lactobacillus, the bacteria found in healthy vaginal flora. Youll find it in yogurt and kefir with live active cultures, or in tablet or pill form.
  • DONT put yogurt anywhere but your mouth. Some women insert yogurt vaginally, but Dr. Goebel recommends against it. Even unsweetened yogurt has natural sugars, which can fuel yeast growth and might make matters worse.

Is Epsom Salt Bath Ok With Yeast Infection

As a rule, showers are better than baths when youre in the process of treating a yeast infection. If you do take a sitz bath with Epsom salt, apple cider vinegar, boric acid, or any other home remedy while youre treating your yeast infection, dont soak for more than 10 minutes at a time.

Yeast infection may not go away, if you only rely on Epsom salt bath.

Can You Mix Epsom Salt And Apple Cider Vinegar In A Bath

To the bath water, add 2 cups of North Coast Organic Apple Cider Vinegar. If your muscles are aching, add a pinch of Epsom salts. Soak for 20-30 minutes, or until the water becomes too chilly. To cool yourself, take a cold shower or get out and dry off with the ACV water still on your skin. The acidity of the vinegar will help soothe sore muscles.

Epsom salts are good for your bones, but if you have kidney problems, an electrolyte imbalance, or are taking medications that affect your kidneys or electrolytes, be careful with adding these ingredients to a bath. See your doctor before using this method if you are pregnant or have a health condition.

Apple Cider Vinegar has many health benefits when used internally as a supplement or ingredient in recipes. It can aid in digestion, reduce inflammation, support healthy immune function, and more. When applied externally, ACV can treat burns, sunburn, cuts, bruises, rashes, and bug bites. It can also be used as a hair rinse to improve blood flow and growth while reducing chemicals needed for shampooing.

There is a common misconception that apple cider vinegar is acidic. In fact, it is quite the opposite: ACV is slightly alkaline. That means it helps neutralize other acids in your body such as stomach acid or uric acid.
