Getting The Most From Your Treatment
- If you have been prescribed the oral liquid medicine, you may find that it causes some staining of the teeth. This will disappear soon after the course of antibiotics is finished.
- Even if you feel your infection has cleared up, keep taking the antibiotic until the course is finished, unless you are told to stop. This is to prevent the infection from coming back. Your doctor will tell you how long your course of treatment will last – this is not usually for longer than 14 days. If you still feel unwell after finishing the course, go back to see your doctor.

Over the last couple of months I have suffered from several kidney infections. What is causing these and what are the treatment options?
Conventional Remedy: The kidneys remove waste products from the blood to make urine. The urine is passed down into the bladder via the ureters and from the bladder to the outside by way of the urethra. This system is called the urinary tract. Infections of the urinary tract are most commonly caused by a bug entering the urethra and making its way into the system.
If an infection affects the bladder, it is called cystitis. This is usually associated with pain on passing urine and a need to urinate more frequently.
An infection affecting the kidneys is known as pyelonephritis. This condition sometimes means blood is found in the urine. It can cause back or loin pain, and a high temperature is also a feature.
If you have not already consulted your doctor, I would strongly suggest that you do so. You need a full assessment of your problem. It may also be necessary for you to have a test called an MSU. This test is done by collecting a sample of urine from the middle of the stream in a sterile container. This will be examined in a laboratory to find out which bug is causing the infection. It will also indicate which antibiotic will be most effective. If the infection is severe and is in the kidneys , intravenous antibiotics may be required, which would involve a short hospital stay.

How Is A Kidney Infection Diagnosed
Kidney infection diagnosis is based on physical symptoms and urine testing. Most typically, a kidney infection diagnosis will be made by a general practitioner, urgent care physician, or emergency room physician.
Kidney infection is a type of urinary tract infection, so symptoms will typically include symptoms of a bladder infection such as pain over the pubic area, frequent urination, and cloudy urine. The healthcare professional will look for specific symptoms of a kidney infection in addition to the UTI symptoms:
- Pain in the side or lower back pain
- Costovertebral angle tenderness, which is pain caused by tapping the back above the kidney
Fever, flank pain, and nausea are the strongest indicators of kidney infection.
The diagnosis is confirmed with urinalysis and a urine culture. The urine test will confirm the diagnosis by identifying white blood cells and other substances indicating infection. The urine culture is used to both identify the type of bacteria responsible for the infection and determine its resistance to antibiotics. Both are critical in determining the most effective antibiotic therapy.
Blood tests are not usually ordered for patients with an uncomplicated kidney infection, but blood will be tested for hospitalized patients.

Icipant Selection And Procedure
Purposeful non-probability sampling was used to recruit participants between August and September 2014. In total, seven face to face interviews were conducted with GPs . All GPs from one rural practice were invited to participate. One declined, another GP was excluded from analysis as the dictaphone failed to record. This practice was selected as the researchers had access to it. UTI is a very common illness and all GPs should have experience treating patients with this illness. Three GPs were invited to participate from an urban practice. Both practices were selected as they had a mixture of male and female and had GPs with a range of levels of experience. Both practices welcomed private fee paying patients and public GMS patients. Within Ireland, private fee paying patients pay between â¬40 and â¬60 to consult their GP while GMS patients receive free health care with a co-payment of approximately â¬1.50 per prescription. Approximately 30% of the Irish population are entitled to the GMS scheme . Payment of consultations and re-consultations may be one factor that influences the expected outcome of the consultation however others also exist.
Recruitment for this study continued until no new themes emerged from the interviews.
Ethical approval for the study was obtained from the Ethical committee of the Irish college of General Practitioners .

- Urinate regularly and when the urge arises. Bacteria can grow when urine stays in the bladder too long.
- Drinking lots of fluid to help flush bacteria out of the system.
- Urinate shortly after sex to help flush away bacteria.
- In women, wipe from front to back after using the toilet to prevent bacteria from entering the urethra.
- Wear cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothes so air can keep the urethra dry.
