Are There Any Natural Alternatives To Monistat

MONISTAT IS TRASH| Here is how I cured my yeast infection NATURALLY.

My favorite natural product for yeast infection is boric acid. Many studies show that its a very effective and safe alternative to conventional treatments even if youve got a chronic yeast infection that just wont go away.

You can or make your own. For DIY boric acid suppositories, youll need boric acid and seven size 0 empty gelatin capsules.

The seven-day treatment with boric acid should be enough to get rid of a yeast infection for good, in fact, youll experience great relief within 48 hours from starting your treatment.

If you suffer from chronic yeast infections, you can keep inserting one suppository a week for up to six months to boost your vaginal health and prevent a recurrence.

The Prescription Pill Didnt Cure My Yeast Infection

When it comes to treating a vaginal yeast infection, you want to stop symptoms like itching, burning, and irritation in their tracks, while choosing a treatment that you know will actually cure the infection. The thing is, yeast infections can be caused by many different types of yeast. And not all treatments are effective against all types of yeast. The prescription pill only treats 3 out of the 5 most common types of yeast, so it may not cure your infection. Lets take a closer look

Yeast Infections Are Super Common Heres What You Should Know About Preventing And Treating One

A month earlier, the symptoms of a yeast infection had seemingly gone away after a 1-day suppository treatment. When I felt the symptoms coming on again, I texted a friend who has a degree in public health.

Do I need to see a doctor since I just had a yeast infection?

I had some garlic in my kitchen, so I decided to give it a go. An article said to insert the clove at night and to anchor it to the outer world with a piece of floss. That night, my dutiful boyfriend Nick used a dentists pick to puncture the clove and secure the floss. In it went, and off we dozed.

I think it worked! I texted my friend, foolishly.

A few hours later, the fire down under raged.

And so began a series of appointments, prescriptions, and Google searches that would persist November through January.

Q: I keep getting yeast infections. Is it okay to self-treat with over-the-counter products?

A: Youre in good company, since 75 percent of all women have a diagnosis of vaginal yeast infections at some point in their lives. Only five percent have the recurrent form of this disorder, .

My first concern is whether you are indeed suffering from yeast infections. Often we read the packaging or see consumer Ads put out by the over-the-counter products that treat yeast describing what its like to hurt down there and are persuaded to use these remedies when the culprit isnt yeast at all. The most common cause of vaginal irritation and discharge is actually nonspecific bacterial vaginosis, which affects 75 percent of women and is much more common than yeast .

So, before I explain what yeast does and how a diagnosis of abnormal vaginal yeast infection is made, I want to say a few words about bacterial causes of vaginal pain and discharge. In order to do that I have to discuss things that may seem gross, but will help you understand whats thriving in our vaginal tract and what regulates our normal flora. The most important bacteria in this domain are lactobacilli, which play an important function in maintaining the normal acidic vaginal pH of 3.8 to 4.5. Lactobacilli produce hydrogen peroxide, which inhibits the growth of bacteria and, by the way, can destroy HIV in cell cultures.

Can Pregnancy Cause Vaginal Yeast Infections

Women who are pregnant are more likely to get a vaginal yeast infection due to the increased estrogen levels. Only 7-day topical yeast infection treatments are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the treatment of yeast infections in pregnant women. If you are pregnant and think you have a vaginal yeast infection, talk to your healthcare professional before using any product to treat the infection.

How Long Does A Yeast Infection Usually Last

Sometimes mild yeast infections will go away on their own within a few days. But most times, yeast infections get worse without treatment. So as soon as you start noticing symptoms, your best bet is to contact your healthcare provider. They can diagnose you and suggest an over-the-counter or prescription antifungal treatment. Once you start taking this, your yeast infection should clear up within about a week.

What To Expect From Prescription Treatment

If you have severe symptoms or OTC medication doesnt clear up your infection, you may need a prescription medication. Your healthcare provider may also recommend taking antifungal medications regularly if you get frequent yeast infections.

Prescription yeast infection medications, such as fluconazole , are taken by mouth. Youll usually only need one dose, but you may be prescribed two doses for very severe symptoms.

Other prescription yeast infection treatments include vaginal antifungal medications you can use for up to two weeks.

Your doctor may also recommend boric acid, another vaginal treatment, that can help treat yeast infections that dont respond to antifungal medications.

If you get a yeast infection while pregnant, OTC topical treatments can provide relief. Your healthcare provider wont prescribe fluconazole, as it can increase the risk of birth defects.

Still, its important to follow up with your healthcare provider if youre pregnant and have a yeast infection thats not getting better.

Your doctor may monitor your liver enzymes while on Diflucan, especially if you are on it for an extended duration of treatment. How About Home Remedies For Yeast Infection

If you prefer to use a home remedy for yeast infection, some of the most powerful home treatments are coconut oil suppositories. In order to make them, youll need:

  • 5 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • Suppository tray
  • 10 drops of tea tree oil or lavender oil

Mix the ingredients in a bowl, pour the mixture onto the suppository tray and place it in the fridge. You can use it as soon as it becomes solid.

Insert one suppository before bedtime for seven consecutive days and make sure you use a pantyliner, as once it melts, it can leak out.

This treatment can be very effective especially if you start it before your yeast infection before its full-blown.

Figure Out If Its Really A Yeast Infection

As Dr. Brandye pointed out, there are many things that you might confuse for a yeast infection, like BV, a UTI, or STIs like herpes. Here are some telltale signs to help you differentiate, especially if youre not sure if you should pick up some Monistat, drink cranberry juice, or call your doc.

Yeast infections vs. Bacterial Vaginosis

Yeast infections have lots of itching and irritation and dont usually have a lot of discharge, but if there is, its white and looks like cottage cheese, explains Dr. Brandye. A more severe yeast infection might cause you discharge with a greenish tint to it. On the other hand, bacterial vaginosis will usually have discharge with a fishy odor.

Yeast infections vs UTIs

Dr. Brandye also adds that sometimes urine coming into contact with the vulva may cause burning, which makes women think theyre experiencing a UTI and not a yeast infection, but UTIs have different symptoms, such as pelvic pain, pain when you urinate, and super frequent urination with with only a small amount of pee coming out.

Yeast infections vs STIs

If you notice any new bumps or lesions, it might not be a yeast infection and could be an STI. These bumps might not always be painful, but things like herpes can cause pain and irritation that may mimic a yeast infection, Dr. Brandye says. However, the pain from these lesions would be more localized to where the lesions are.

I had a yeast infection 5 years ago and I got the same symptoms, my discharge was creme colored and not chunky so I did a monistat 1 day. The next day my discharge is still itchy my labia was swollen and my discharge is white and chunky. When I treated myself before I did not have these issues, it went away basically the next day. Should I take the monistat 1 again?

TheWoman

Please do not advise a woman Not to go to the ER. My yeast infection did not clear. I used Monistat 7. I went to Urgent Care got an antibiotic. I called the Doctors Office all week has symptoms worsened, no Nurse called back. Thursday night my daughter came home, gave two young babies to her husband and took me to ER. It turned septic. I told the ER doctor I was going to wait to the following day to come in, while the Grandbabies napped. The ER Doc said if I waited I would have died. I had an IV line attached for weeks, hospitalized, and sent home with an IV attached to administer antibiotics. Be careful with bladder and yeast infections ladies, our lives are more fragile than we know. Error on the side of caution.

Id say stick with monistat 7 and not the 1. I know my symptoms got worse overnight when I used the 1. As soon as I used the 7 it started to clear up.

While both Monistat and Diflucan are antifungal medications used to treat vaginal yeast infections, they are not the same. Monistat is available for purchase without a prescription and is used locally in the vaginal area. Diflucan is a prescription medication and is taken orally for systemic absorption.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Vaginal Yeast Infection

In some cases, another symptom of a vaginal yeast infection can be pain during sex.
