Can I Go To Urgent Care For Ear Infection

Urgent message: Rashes often lead patients to seek relief in the urgent care center. The ability to differentiate among common, superficial fungal infections and to select the most appropriate treatment or refer is an important skill to master.

Kosta G. Skandamis, MD and George Skandamis, MDIntroduction Superficial fungal infections are among the most common skin conditions seen in the urgent care setting. Dermatophytes are the most common type of fungi that infect and survive on dead keratin , but certainly not the only type the clinician is likely to be presented with. Candidiasis, primarily due to Candida albicans, affects not only mucous membranes, but also skin . Finally, tinea versicolor (also known as pityriasis versicolor or, more colloquially, as yeast infection(is caused by the lipophilic yeast Pityrosporum, also known as Malassezia furfur.

In this article, we will review common causative organisms and discuss presenting characteristics, differential diagnosis, and available treatments.

Overview: Dermatophyte Infections Three types of dermatophytes account for the majority of superficial fungal infections:

Dermatophytes can be classified according to the place of origin , according to the tissue mainly involved , or by body region affected .

It is not uncommon for dermatophyte infections to affect healthy individuals, but immunocompromised patients are particularly susceptible.

Otitis Interna Or Labyrinthitis

It is defined as the inflammation in the inner ear caused by a bacterial or viral infection.

Causes Purulent labyrinthitis usually occurs when bacteria spread to the inner ear as a complication of severe OM, purulent meningitis, trauma causing a labyrinthine fracture leading to an infection, or an enlarging cholesteatoma.

Symptoms Symptoms of purulent labyrinthitis include ear pain, fever, severe vertigo, nystagmus, nausea and vomiting, tinnitus , and hearing loss.

Symptoms of viral vestibular neuronitis include severe vertigo, with nausea, vomiting and persistent nystagmus toward the affected side, which lasts 7 to 10 days.

The condition resolves over days to weeks after the initial episode. Some patients have residual balance issues.

Diagnosis CT of the temporal bone is done to identify erosion of the otic capsule bone or other complications of acute otitis media leading OI.

MRI may be done if symptoms of meningitis or brain abscess are noted. In that case, a lumbar puncture and blood cultures also are done.

Patients suspected of having vestibular neuronitis undergo an audiologic assessment, electronystagmography with caloric testing, and contrast-enhanced MRI of the head.

Treatment Treatment is with IV antibiotics appropriate for meningitis .

These are later adjusted according to results of culture and sensitivity testing.

A myringotomy is done to drain the middle ear.

If vomiting is prolonged, IV fluids and electrolytes may be required.

Middle Vs Outer Ear Infection

Otitis media refers to the middle ear, whereas otitis externa refers to the outer ear. Otitis media, an infection of the middle ear, is the most common ear infection. This type of infection can be acute, lasting only for a short time, chronic, lasting for a long time, or recurring.

Although research shows that viruses are responsible for most cases, middle ear infections can also be caused by bacteria. Middle ear infections are caused by fluid buildup behind the eardrum. This buildup allows for the growth of bacteria and viruses which can lead to pain, swelling, and bulging of the eardrum. Trouble hearing is commonly experienced when having a middle ear infection.

Otitis externa is the inflammation or infection of the ear canal found between the eardrum and the outer ear. It is commonly referred to as âswimmerâs ear,â as those who spend a lot of time in the water frequently develop this infection. Water can get trapped in the ear canal and provide a home for bacteria to grow.

EAR INFECTION OR COVID? GOING TO URGENT CARE TO FIND OUT

Your doctor probably wont tell you to wipe down surfaces in the hospital room with bleach or alcohol wipes. Yet high-touch areas like bed rails and elevator buttons can harbor the pathogens that cause infections.

Karen Curtiss, whose father contracted several HAIs in the hospital following a lung transplant, including MRSA and C. difficile, spent weeks in the hospital with her dad. She was never told to wipe down any surfaces with bleach or alcohol, or even to wash her own hands. We had no idea how easy it is to bring germs into the patients room, says Curtiss. Her father died at the age of 71 from these untreatable infections without ever leaving the hospital.
