Three out of four people with vaginas will experience yeast infections at some point in their lifetime. People become symptomatic when an overgrowth of the organism, typically Candida, penetrates the superficial layers of the skin, says Barbara Frank, MD, an OB-GYN in Brookline, Massachusetts, and medical adviser to Attn: Grace. Because yeast infections can cause itching burning, and redness, its important to have over-the-counter yeast infection medicines on hand.

Is Vagisil Or Monistat More Effective

It is difficult to compare the two drugs because they work differently. Vagisil can help with external itching, but will not cure a yeast infection. Therefore, if the itching is due to a yeast infection, Vagisil may help relieve symptoms temporarily, but will not cure the yeast infection that is causing the symptoms. If you are experiencing itching due to local irritation not associated with a yeast infection, Vagisil may be helpful, while Monistat would not be an effective treatment.

Monistat has been shown to be effective as an antifungal and will help cure a yeast infection. Using the external cream in the combination pack can help relieve symptoms while you wait for the infection to be cured.

You can always check with your doctor to see if Vagisil or Monistat is an appropriate choice for you because he or she should be familiar with your medical condition and history.

To Insert The Clotrimazole Cream Vaginally Read The Instructions Provided With The Medication And Follow These Steps:

  • Fill the special applicator that comes with the cream to the level indicated.
  • Lie on your back with your knees drawn upward and spread apart or standing with your feet far apart and knees bent.
  • Withdraw the applicator.
  • Discard the applicator if it is disposable. If the applicator is reusable, pull it apart and clean it with soap and warm water after each use.
  • Wash your hands promptly to avoid spreading the infection.
  • The dose should be applied when you lie down to go to bed. It works best if you do not get up again after applying it except to wash your hands. You may wish to wear a sanitary napkin while using the vaginal cream to protect your clothing against stains. Continue using clotrimazole vaginal cream even if you get your period during treatment.

What Are The Main Differences Between Vagisil And Monistat

Vagisil is an OTC local anesthetic cream containing benzocaine 5% and resorcinol 2%. There is also a Vagisil maximum strength formulation which contains benzocaine 20% and resorcinol 3%, as well as a Vagisil sensitive anti-itch cream which contains hydrocortisone 1%, a steroid that helps with external itching. Although Vagisil is often thought of as a yeast infection treatment, it does not actually cure yeast infections.

Monistat is an OTC antifungal cream that contains the active ingredient miconazole nitrate. Monistat is available in a variety of formulations: a one-day , three-day , or seven-day treatment. You can buy Monistat as an internal vaginal cream or suppository. Some types of Monistat are available as a combination pack, with a tube of miconazole 2% cream that you can use externally to relieve symptoms.

    What Causes Recurring Yeast Infections

About 5 to 8 percent of women experience four or more yeast infections in a single year, a condition known as recurrent or chronic yeast infections.

Itâs not clear why some women get chronic or recurring yeast infections, but there are several risk factors that can predispose you to it, such as pregnancy, birth control pills, estrogen therapy, regular antibiotic use, diabetes, and conditions that affect your immune system, particularly HIV.

Treatments used for normal yeast infections are effective if your recurring yeast infections are caused by C. albicans.

But some infections are caused by other Candida species, such as C. glabrata, which may require treatment with a Mycostatin vaginal cream or tablet, a vaginal gel containing the antifungals amphotericin B and flucytosine, or another treatment.

I have tried both, and I recall them both giving such a horrible reaction. I felt like I was on fire. Once, I woke up and my vaginal lips were completely swollen, so I immediately went to my OBGYN, and even she couldn’t figure it out. She made a few phone calls to other doctor friends of hers, and told me to take a Benadryl…… Yes that simple! Who would of thought something that simple is the solution right? I took it, and BOOM I went back to feeling GREAT! I tend to get a yeast infection maybe once a year, and I will only do the 1-day treatments. Both work fine, but now I just take a Benadryl as soon as I apply the 1-day treatment before bed, and I wake up feeling fine. Remember ladies BENADRYL!

i found that i am alergic to monistat and miconazole, i can only use clotrimazole, walgreens usually carries it, but it can be hard to find. monistat and miconazole burned it bad.

Actual facts that answer the question:

Most yeast infections are caused by a type of yeast called Candida albicans, but some are caused by the yeast Candida glabrata, which can be harder to treat.

Tioconazole is an antifungal treatment that is only available as a single dose, so all tioconazole yeast infection products are 1-Day treatments. Tioconazole is known to work against both Candida albicans and Candida glabrata, the two strains of yeast most common in vaginal yeast infections.

Anyway, I’ve tried the 1 days several times and never once has it cured the infection. Every one is different.

How Is A Yeast Infection Diagnosed

If you suspect you may have a vaginal yeast infection, you should visit a healthcare professional for a diagnosis. Although in some cases it is possible to self-diagnose a yeast infection, it is important to understand the severity of the infection and gain access to the appropriate treatment through a physician. If you suspect you have a yeast infection, you will want to avoid douching, using tampons, and having sexual intercourse before your appointment, so your healthcare provider can make a proper assessment.

You can visit either your primary healthcare provider or an OB/GYN for a diagnosis. During your visit, the healthcare professional will take a small sample of the vaginal discharge. This sample will either be evaluated in the office or sent to a lab to be checked under a microscope for the presence of Candida. According to the CDC, this doesnt always mean a yeast infection is occurring, as Candida can be present without symptoms. Your healthcare professional will work with you to determine whether or not you have a yeast infection.
