How Are Yeast Infections Treated
Prescription and OTC medications both treat vaginal yeast infections. If this is your first time experiencing a yeast infection, its best to talk with your doctor for an official diagnosis.
However, if youre familiar with the symptoms, youll likely be able to pick up an OTC medication to treat the yeast infection.
Talk with your doctor to assess your symptoms and treatment needs if:
- your symptoms dont go away after finishing treatment
- the infection comes back within 2 months
- you have four or more yeast infections within 12 months
Prescription yeast infection medications can include oral pills, creams, ointments, or gels. Diflucan is an oral medication usually prescribed as one dose. For a severe yeast infection, your doctor may recommend a longer prescription course.
Other available OTC or prescription medications include:
Be sure to always finish the entire treatment course, even if your symptoms resolve before completing the medication.
Most OTC treatments are either topical creams and gels or oral medications. Although they all have the common goal of alleviating symptoms, they tend to work differently.
What Treatment Options Are Available
Genital yeast infections are usually treatable with over-the-counter medication. If you experience frequent or severe yeast infections, you may want to see your doctor or other healthcare provider for prescription-strength medication.
Although oral thrush may be treated with home remedies and other OTC options, it can be difficult to clear without prescription medication. If this is your first experience with oral thrush, you may consider seeing a healthcare provider for treatment.
When Should I See A Doctor
If youve never had a yeast infection, you should see a doctor for a proper diagnosis before you try any OTC treatments.
You should also talk with a doctor if you dont notice any improvement in your symptoms within 7 to 14 days. In this case, you may need a prescription-strength treatment, or you could have a different infection.

First Drug In New Antifungal Class
The US Food and Drug Administration has approved ibrexafungerp tablets as a 1-day oral therapy for vaginal yeast infections, something 3 out of every 4 women encounter at least once in their life.
Ibrexafungerp is the first drug approved in a new antifungal class for the condition, formally known as vulvovaginal candidiasis , in more than 20 years, the drugâs manufacturer Scynexis said in a press release. It becomes the first and only non-azole treatment for vaginal yeast infections.
The biotechnology company said approval came after positive results from two phase 3 studies in which oral ibrexafungerp demonstrated efficacy and tolerability. The most common reactions observed in clinical trials were diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, and vomiting.
There are few other treatments for vaginal yeast infections, which is the second most common cause of vaginitis. Those previously approved agents include several topical azole antifungals and oral fluconazole , which, Scynexis says, is the only other orally administered antifungal approved for the treatment of VVC in the US and has accounted for over more than 90% of prescriptions written for the condition each year.
However, the company notes, oral fluconazole reports a 55% therapeutic cure rate on its label, which now also includes warnings of potential fetal harm, demonstrating the need for new oral options.
David Angulo, MD, chief medical officer for Scynexis, said in a statement the tablets brings new benefits.

When To Seek Medical Advice
Speak to your GP if you develop symptoms of oral thrush. If left untreated, the symptoms will often persist and your mouth will continue to feel uncomfortable.
In severe cases that are left untreated, there is also a risk of the infection spreading further into your body, which can be serious.
Your GP will usually be able to diagnose oral thrush simply by examining your mouth. Sometimes they may also recommend blood tests to look for certain conditions associated with oral thrush, such as diabetes and nutritional deficiencies.

Yeast Infection In Mouth Caused By Candida Overgrowth
The most common cause of yeast infection in the mouth is a systemic candida overgrowth in the body. In this case, there are usually additional signs of the yeast infection in the body in addition to the yeast infection in the mouth. In other words, the yeast infection in the mouth is one symptom of a larger problem of yeast overgrowth in the body. This is very common.
Common candida overgrowth symptoms may include external signs causing infections of the skin, toenails, feet, mouth, tongue and genitals, as well as internal symptoms causing digestive issues, mood swings, brain fog, muscle and joint pain and breathing or sinus infections.
To see if your symptoms and medical history may be related to candida overgrowth infection in your body, see:candida overgrowth test.
Candida overgrowth occurs when the balance between candida yeast and the good bacteria is being disturbed. Candida is well known in the medical literature as an opportunistic organism that takes advantage in such situations where the bodys ability to naturally prevent the yeast from overgrowing is impaired.
What Is The Best Natural Cure For A Yeast Infection
Just like with medications, there isnt a perfect natural cure for everyone. Tea tree oil vaginal suppositories are popular for some, but those with sensitive skin may not be able to use them. Boric acid is recommended by the CDC as a more natural approach in patients with non-albicans vaginitis, but pregnant women cannot use it. You may need to consult a natural healthcare professional or gynecologist to find an appropriate solution.

Some Candida Species Are Resistant To Drugs
Though azoles work well against C. albicans, some other Candida species are resistant to these first-line drugs.
For example, about half of C. glabrata strains isolated from recurrent yeast infections are far less susceptible to fluconazole than C. albicans, and C. krusei is completely resistant to it.
To treat non-albicans yeast infections, your doctor may prescribe a Mycostatin vaginal cream or tablet, which you must apply or take daily for 14 days.
With treatment, your yeast infection will pass after one to seven days .
If a week is too long for you, you can also try a single dose of a powerful azole oral medication fluconazole, if appropriate.
Can Fluconazole Cause Problems
Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. The table below contains some of the most common ones associated with fluconazole. You will find a full list in the manufacturerâs information leaflet supplied with your medicine. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following continue or become troublesome.
